WASHINGTON (AP) ? The White House is seeking $1.6 trillion in higher taxes over a decade and an immediate infusion of funds to aid the jobless, help hard-pressed homeowners and perhaps extend the expiring payroll tax cut, officials said Thursday as talks aimed at averting an economy-rattling "'fiscal cliff" turned testy.

In exchange, the officials said, President Barack Obama will support an unspecified amount of spending cuts this year, to be followed by legislation in 2013 producing savings of as much as $400 billion from Medicare and other benefit programs over a decade.

The offer produced a withering response from House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, after a closed-door meeting in the Capitol with Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner. "Unfortunately, many Democrats continue to rule out sensible spending cuts that must be part of any significant agreement that will reduce our deficit," he declared.

Boehner added, "No substantive progress has been made between the White House and the House" in the two weeks since Obama welcomed congressional leaders at the White House.

Democrats swiftly countered that any holdup was the fault of Republicans who refuse to accept Obama's campaign-long call to raise tax rates on upper incomes.

At the White House, presidential press secretary Jay Carney said, "There can be no deal without rates on top earners going up." Taking a confrontational, at times sarcastic tone, he said, "This should not be news to anyone on Capitol Hill. It is certainly not news to anyone in America who was not in a coma during the campaign season."

With barely a month remaining until a year-end deadline, the hardening of positions seemed more likely to mark a transition into hard bargaining rather than signal an end to efforts to achieve a compromise on the first postelection challenge of divided government.

Boehner suggested as much when one reporter asked if his comments meant he was breaking off talks with the White House and congressional Democrats.

"No, no, no. Stop," he quickly answered.

"I've got to tell you, I'm disappointed in where we are, and disappointed in what's happened over the last couple weeks. But going over the fiscal cliff is serious business."

Republican aides provided the first description of the White House's offer, although Democratic officials readily confirmed the outlines.

Under the proposal, the White House is seeking passage by year's end of tax increases totaling $1.6 trillion over a decade, including the rate hikes sought by Obama.

Obama also asked for approval by year's end of $30 billion to renew expiring jobless benefits, $25 billion to prevent a looming Jan. 1 cut in fees for doctors who treat Medicare patients and an undisclosed amount to help homeowners hit by the collapse in real estate values.

The White House also wants a new stimulus package to aid the economy, with a price tag for the first year of $50 billion, as well as an extension of the Social Security payroll tax cut that is due to end on Dec. 31, or some way to offset the impact of its expiration.

In political terms, the White House proposal is a near mirror image of what officials have said Republicans earlier laid down as their first offer ? a permanent extension of income tax cuts at all levels, an increase in the age of Medicare eligibility and steps to curtail future growth in Social Security cost-of-living increases.

In exchange, the GOP has offered to support unspecified increases in revenue as part of tax reform legislation to be written in 2013.

The GOP said the White House was offering unspecified spending cuts this year. Those would be followed next year by legislation producing savings from Medicare and other benefit programs of up to $400 billion over a decade, a companion to an overhaul of the tax code.

For the first time since the Nov., 6 elections, partisan bickering seems to trump productive bargaining as the two sides maneuvered for position.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told reporters, "We're still waiting for a serious offer from Republicans," the Nevada Democrat said at a news conference.

Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., was more emphatic.

Referring to a meeting at the White House more than a week ago, he said both sides agreed to a two-part framework that would include a significant down payment in 2012, along with a plan to expand on the savings in 2013.

"Each side said they'd submit a down payment. We have. Our preference is revenue. What is theirs?" he said, speaking of the Republicans.

The White House also circulated a memo that said closing loopholes and limiting tax deductions ? a preferred Republican alternative to Obama's call to raise high-end tax rates ? would be likely to depress charitable donations and wind up leading to a middle class tax increase in the near future.

At issue is a bipartisan desire to prevent the wholesale expiration of Bush-era tax cuts and the simultaneous implementation of across-the-board spending cuts. The potential spending reductions, to be divided between military and domestic programs, were locked into place more than a year ago in hopes the threat would have forced a compromise on a deficit reduction deal before now.

Economists in and out of government warn that sending the economy over the "cliff" would trigger a recession.

To avoid the danger, Obama and Congress are hoping to devise a plan that can reduce future deficits by as much as $4 trillion in a decade, cancel the tax increases and automatic spending cuts and expand the government's ability to borrow beyond the current limit of $16.4 trillion.

In the first few days after the elections, Boehner said he was willing to accept a deal that included new revenues, a long-time Democratic demand, and Obama has said he will sign on to savings from Medicare, Medicaid and other benefit programs that Democrats have long defended from proposed Republican cuts.

At the same time, both sides have worked to tilt the bargaining table to their advantage. As part of that effort, Obama travels to Pennsylvania on Friday to campaign for his tax proposal.

Boehner, who will begin a second term as House speaker early next month, has appealed to his rank and file to remain united. At a closed-door meeting this week, he displayed polling data that showed the public would rather see loopholes closed than rates raised as a means of raising revenue for the government.

At the same time, there are tremors within the GOP ranks, with a small number of Republicans saying they are willing to let tax rates rise at upper incomes in view of the election returns, and others predicting legislation to that effect would pass the House if put to a vote.

Endangered primates caught in Congolese conflict

As the United Nations warns of a growing humanitarian crisis in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the advance of the M23 rebel militia might also affect the gorillas and chimps in the region.

Last week the M23 rebels took the city of Goma and vowed to march south to Bukavu. As well as the armed conflict, there have been reports of the murder and abduction of women and children. Yesterday the rebels announced that they will withdraw from Goma but their intentions are far from clear. If they do move on to Bukavu, in their path is the Primate Rehabilitation Centre of Lwiro, which holds more than 50 chimps and 70 monkeys, and the GRACE gorilla sanctuary in Kasugho, which cares for gorillas wounded by poachers or armed conflict.

"In addition to the captive apes, we are concerned about wild ape populations ? chimpanzees, lowland gorillas, and the critically endangered mountain gorillas," says Anna Behm Masozera of the International Gorilla Conservation Programme in Kigali, Rwanda.

The Lwiro sanctuary put its contingency plan into action last week: they have stockpiled enough food, water, fuel, medications and cleaning supplies necessary to run the sanctuary for 15 days, says its director, Carmen Vidal, should the need arise.

Shots and riots

If the rebels continue their advance towards Lwiro, the plan is for some workers to seek safety at a nearby UN camp, and for some of the expatriate workers to return to their countries, says Vidal. The staff that choose to remain would continue to care for the animal residents. "Although the majority of Lwiro's animals are semi-free-ranging, they need to be fed three times a day as the forest doesn't have sufficient food for all of them."

"There have been shots and rioting near us in the past week as tensions rise among the various militia factions and within local communities," says Vidal. As a result, Lwiro's animals have "become nervous, display stereotypical stress behaviours and some have even stopped eating".

Luitzen Santman, the director of GRACE, says that his sanctuary has also stockpiled extra food and supplies and that the United Nations peacekeeping mission, MONUSCO, is on standby to provide extra protection if needed. "We are experienced with insecurity in the region" he says. Fortunately, GRACE is located "at a very remote field site that has no political or military relevance. Field conservation sites like GRACE that stay politically neutral seem not to attract attention of rebel groups."

Santman says that primates are unlikely to be directly targeted by the rebel groups to make a political point, but says there might be an increase in them being killed for bushmeat as fighters move through their habitat.

Gorillas missing

Since the M23 reached the Virunga National Park near Goma in July, they have more or less cooperated with the park authorities, allowing staff to search for missing gorilla families but this became impossible recently when fighting in the region intensified. Two mountain gorilla families are currently unaccounted for.

"There are many concerns in this time of uncertainty but the biggest is that for three months we have been unable to redeploy our rangers into the gorilla sector of the park," says chief warden Emmanuel de Merode.

This problem is exacerbated by the unavailability of the light aircraft normally used by the Virunga workers for surveillance and monitoring of the 7800-square-kilometre park. The park's staff moved it to Goma airport earlier this month to stop it falling into rebel hands, but they were unable to risk moving it again when it became clear that the city was a target. The UN is currently in control of the airport but they are surrounded by the M23. Without the aircraft at their disposal, the park workers are unable to keep track of their animals.

It is not only the M23 group that Virunga workers have to contend with. Some sections of the park are controlled by militia groups of the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), who along with the Mai Mai Pareco group have used the M23's battle with Congolese troops to step up their illegal poaching activities.

In the past two weeks an elephant and a buffalo have been killed in the park's central sector. Destruction of primates' habitat is also an increasing problem. Groups such as the FDLR Mandevu, who operate out of the park just north of Goma, finance themselves through the sale of illegal charcoal, produced by burning timber from the park's forests.

Lomography Diana F+

The Lomography Diana F+ ($89 direct) is the classic toy camera. It's shoddily constructed from flimsy-feeling material, uses a plastic lens that is anything but sharp, and is prone to light leaks?but that's all part of its charm. If you're a fan of the Instagram look, and are willing to put the extra time and money in to shoot with film, the Diana F+ is an appealing camera. But it's definitely not for those who value image sharpness above all.

The camera is washed in a black and teal color scheme, with a teal flash. It measures about 3.75 by 5 by 3 inches and is quite light, thanks to its plasticky build. The lens is a 75mm focal length with three aperture settings?they're labeled sunny, partly sunny, and cloudy, but in reality they are f/11, f/16, and f/22. There's also an f/150 pinhole setting; to utilize that you'll need to remove the lens by twisting it off. The standard shutter speed is 1/60 of a second, but there's also a bulb setting that will keep the shutter open for as long as you hold the lever release down, and a shutter lock that can be used for very long exposures?the type you'll need to capture pinhole imagery. The removable lens also lets you replace it with a fisheye, wide-angle, or telephoto optic?each of which sells for around $30. The film advances via a manual dial, and if you'd like to take a double exposure, you can simply fire the shutter again without winding.

The Diana F+ includes a detachable flash, which makes it useable as an indoor camera?it's relatively slow aperture will make most indoor use difficult, even with very fast film. If you use color negative or black and white film, you'll have some room to guess exposures based on the aperture logos?ISO 400 speed is an appropriate estimate for the settings, as it generally has a good amount of wiggle room with the exposure. If you're planning on shooting with slide film you'll have to be a bit more cautious, and a light meter is recommended there?for best results, take a reading first and then load the appropriate film speed based on the conditions you're under.

There's an optical viewfinder to frame photos, but it's not the most accurate at closer distances. It shows the square aspect ratio of which the camera is capable. If you shoot photos without the included exposure mask you end up with shots that fill a 6-by-6-centimeter frame, but show heavy darkening around the edges. There's a mask included that reduces the photo size, but eliminates the vignette?personally, my preference is to shoot the whole frame. Chances are you'll be scanning negatives or prints for online sharing, and you can always crop photos at that stage in the game.

If you're looking to get into the hipster-throwback photo scene, there isn't a more classic toy camera than the Diana F+ with which to get started. Its plastic lens captures dreamy images, and it's actually a pretty versatile toy camera thanks to its pinhole capability, interchangeable lens functionality, and the included detachable flash. Medium format film is readily available online, and while most drug stores won't process it onsite, they will send it out. If you want to scan your negatives for online sharing you can do so at home with a flatbed scanner with support for transparencies. The big negatives offer a lot of resolution, so you'll be able to pull more detail out of them when compared with 35mm film. Sure, you can use a smartphone with Instagram or Hipstamatic and add some blur filters to the edges of your image, and you'll have the versatility of being able to change from color to black-and-white with a tap on your phone's screen, but sacrificing that convenience makes it possible to capture surreal images on actual film?a tactile feeling that can't be matched by phone cameras and software filters.

Sacombank loans for price stabilization program - SaigonMoney.com

Traders, trading households and companies joining the price stabilization program in HCMC can borrow money from Saigon Thuong Tin Commercial Bank (Sacombank) with an annual preferential rate of 10% over a period of six months to one year.
According to the lender, the total amount of its preferential loans is VND1 trillion which is effective until January 31, 2013 or until when the amount is used up.

The special credit package primarily targets enterprises joining the city?s price stabilization program for a maximum lending period of six months with an interest rate of 10% annually for the first three months.

Six corporate members of the program on Tuesday inked credit agreements with Sacombank branches under the witness of Le Ngoc Dao, deputy director of the city?s Department of Industry and Trade serving as the program?s organizer, and deputy director Nguyen Hoang Minh of the central bank?s HCMC Branch.

Meanwhile, trading households and vendors at traditional markets in the city are also able to gain access to the bank?s low-interest loans when meeting requirements, with their booths used as collateral. The lending term is up to one year with a yearly rate of 10% for the first three months.

Management boards of 36 traditional markets and commercial centers including three wholesales markets on Tuesday signed credit agreements with Sacombank branches. Right after the signing ceremony, staff members of Sacombank will come to every market to instruct traders to apply for loans and to receive the applications from them, Dao said.

Minh of the central bank said local banks now are ready to provide loans to companies, explaining the central bank has directed lenders to promptly support enterprises.

However, the disbursement pace still depends on local enterprises as many firms are hesitant to take out loans given the current mounting inventories and tightened lending conditions.

The VND200-trillion credit package that local lenders have set aside for companies to prepare for the upcoming Lunar New Year has had over VND77 trillion disbursed as of now, Minh said.

A number of banks have relaxed lending conditions for vendors at traditional markets, taking the vendors? stands as collateral, he noted. The lenders are working with authorities of markets to find borrowers as well, he said.

Pack your bags for a move to Mars

Elon Musk, the billionaire founder and CEO of the private spaceflight company SpaceX, wants to help establish a Mars colony of up to 80,000 people by ferrying explorers to the Red Planet for perhaps $500,000 a trip.

In Musk's vision, the ambitious Mars settlement program would start with a pioneering group of fewer than 10 people, who would journey to the Red Planet aboard a huge reusable rocket powered by liquid oxygen and methane.

"At Mars, you can start a self-sustaining civilization and grow it into something really big," Musk told an audience at the Royal Aeronautical Society in London on Nov. 16. Musk was there to talk about his business plans, and to receive the society?s gold medal for his contribution to the commercialization of space.

Mars pioneers
Accompanying the founders of the new Mars colony would be large amounts of equipment, including machines to produce fertilizer, methane and oxygen from Mars? atmospheric nitrogen and carbon dioxide and the planet's subsurface water ice.

The Red Planet pioneers would also take construction materials to build transparent domes, which when pressurized with Mars? atmospheric CO2 could grow Earth crops in Martian soil. As the Mars colony became more self sufficient, the big rocket would start to transport more people and fewer supplies and equipment. [Future Visions of Human Spaceflight]

Musk?s architecture for this human Mars exploration effort does not employ cyclers, reusable spacecraft that would travel back and forth constantly between the Red Planet and Earth ? at least not at first

"Probably not a Mars cycler; the thing with the cyclers is, you need a lot of them," Musk told Space.com. "You have to have propellant to keep things aligned as (Mars and Earth?s) orbits aren?t (always) in the same plane. In the beginning you won?t have cyclers."

Musk also ruled out SpaceX's Dragon capsule, which the company is developing to ferry astronauts to and from low-Earth orbit, as the spacecraft that would land colonists on the Red Planet. When asked by Space.com what vehicle would be used, he said, "I think you just land the entire thing."

Asked if the "entire thing" is the huge new reusable rocket ? which is rumored to bear the acronymic name MCT, short for Mass Cargo Transport or Mars Colony Transport ? Musk said, "Maybe."

Musk has been thinking about what his colonist-carrying spacecraft would need, whatever it ends up being. He reckons the oxygen concentration inside should be 30 to 40 percent, and he envisions using the spacecraft?s liquid water store as a barrier between the Mars pioneers and the sun.

A $500,000 ticket
Musk?s $500,000 ticket price for a Mars trip was derived from what he thinks is affordable.

"The ticket price needs to be low enough that most people in advanced countries, in their mid-forties or something like that, could put together enough money to make the trip," he said, comparing the purchase to buying a house in California. [Photos: The First Space Tourists]

He also estimated that of the 8 billion humans that will be living on Earth by the time the colony is possible, perhaps one in 100,000 would be prepared to go. That equates to potentially 80,000 migrants.

Musk figures the colony program ? which he wants to be a collaboration between government and private enterprise ? would end up costing about $36 billion. He arrived at that number by estimating that a colony that costs 0.25 percent or 0.5 percent of a nation?s gross domestic product (GDP) would be considered acceptable.

The United States' GDP in 2010 was $14.5 trillion; 0.25 percent of $14.5 trillion is $36 billion. If all 80,000 colonists paid $500,000 per seat for their Mars trip, $40 billion would be raised.

"Some money has to be spent on establishing a base on Mars. It?s about getting the basic fundamentals in place," Musk said. "That was true of the English colonies (in the Americas); it took a significant expense to get things started. But once there are regular Mars flights, you can get the cost down to half a million dollars for someone to move to Mars. Then I think there are enough people who would buy that to have it be a reasonable business case."

The big reusable rocket
The fully reusable rocket that Musk wants to take colonists to Mars is an evolution of SpaceX's Falcon 9 booster, which launches Dragon.

"It?s going to be much bigger (than Falcon 9), but I don?t think we?re quite ready to state the payload. We?ll speak about that next year," Musk said, emphasizing that only fully reusable rockets and spacecraft would keep the ticket price for Mars migration as low as $500,000.

SpaceX is already testing what Musk calls a next-generation, reusable Falcon 9 rocket that can take off vertically and land vertically. The prototype, called Grasshopper, is a Falcon 9 first stage with landing legs.

Grasshopper has made two short flights. The first was on Sept. 21 and reached a height of 6 feet (2 meters); the second test, on Nov. 1, was to a height of 17.7 feet (5.4 m). A planned milestone for the Grasshopper project is to reach an altitude of 100 feet (30 m). [Grasshopper Rocket's 2-Story Test Flight (Video)]

"Over the next few months, we?ll gradually increase the altitude and speed," Musk said. "I do think there probably will be some craters along the way; we?ll be very lucky if there are no craters. Vertical landing is an extremely important breakthrough ? extreme, rapid reusability. It?s as close to aircraft-like dispatch capability as one can achieve."

Musk wants to have a reusable Falcon 9 first stage, which uses Grasshopper technology, come back from orbit in "the next year or two." He then wants to use this vertical-landing technology for Falcon 9?s upper stage.

Musk hopes to have a fully reusable version of Falcon 9 in five or six years, but he acknowledged that those could be "famous last words."

A rocket stepping stone
Another stepping stone toward the planned reusable Mars rocket is SpaceX?s Falcon Heavy launcher. With a first flight planned for next year from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, the Heavy is a Falcon 9 that has two Falcon 9 first stages bolted on either side.

Musk expects the Falcon Heavy to launch from Florida's Cape Canaveral eventually. This triple-first-stage rocket will be able to put 116,600 pounds (53,000 kilograms) into a 124-mile (200 kilometers) low-Earth orbit. But the Falcon Heavy is still much smaller than Musk?s fully reusable Mars rocket, which will also employ a new engine.

While Musk declines to state what the Mars rocket?s payload capability will be, he does say it will use a new staged combustion cycle engine called Raptor. The cycle involves two steps. Propellant ? the fuel and oxidizer ? is ignited in pre-burners to produce hot high-pressure gases that help pump propellant into the engine?s combustion chamber. The hot gases are then directed into the same chamber to aid in the combustion of the propellants.

Because Raptor is a staged combustion engine ? like the main engines of NASA's now-retired space shuttle fleet ? it is expected to be far more efficient than the open-cycle Merlin engines used by the Falcon 9.

While the Falcon 9?s engines use liquid oxygen (LOX) and kerosene, Raptor will use LOX and methane. Musk explained that "the energy cost of methane is the lowest, and it has a slight ISP (specific impulse) advantage over kerosene and doesn?t have any of the bad aspects of hydrogen." (Hydrogen is difficult to store at cryogenic temperatures, makes metal brittle and is very flammable.)

Strictly Baileys retains the fifth box in the Grade A4 Bags/Sis 500 ? Heat 1

Competing in the first heat of the Grade A4 Bags/Sis 500 are, North Adam, Greenhills Faye, Tallahassee, Shave Off, Paid Harry and Strictly Baileys. The 480 metres flat race will be staged by Swindon on Monday, 26th November, and it carries the total prize money of ?150. All the participants eager for the race tonight have already taken part at this level before.

The most over whelming entry for the race is the five-year-old fawn dog, Strictly Baileys. The 3 to 1 shot for the race has the sixth box reserved for the race and has raced in the black and white jacket before too.

After the training session on 4th September, 2012 at Swindon over 480 metres, the five-year-old won two Grade A4 races out of the six outings.

The Q. Bevan trained won the Grade A4 480 metres flat race on 15th October, 2012 at Swindon. The sixth trap raced on the wide end of the trap and saved most of the ground while staying by it. Leading just near the line had him rolling through the wire in 29.55 seconds.

He set the favourite entry of the race, Barrack Chick, by half-length.

Filling in the third spot was, Tintreach Strike.

Getting declared as not raced in the very next outing led to a training session on 6th November, 2012 at Swindon over 480 metres. He leashed out of the fifth trap and was able to complete the task assigned in 29.70 seconds.

Surf Lorian?s dog ended fifth in the Grade A4 480 metres flat race on 10th November, 2012 at Swindon.

The race was won by, Grazeley June in 29.50 seconds.

The surge in his chances of winning came around when he claimed the winner?s prize money of the Grade A4 480 metres flat race on 19th November, 2012 at Swindon.

The fifth trap secured ground on the wide end, raced on in a composed form and then made it to the other end of the wire in 29.73 seconds.

It is lucky for him that he has been allotted the trap from which he very recently won.

Advice Sisters ? Speed Up Your Computer System, With System ...

?

You?ve probably seen software companies that claim their product will help speed up your old jalopy of an overworked, overstuffed computer. But do they really work?

Nothing, short of a genie, can take an old computer with a slow processor and too little memory storage, and turn it into a sleek jaguar that responds in second flat, ?but System Mechanic software can speed it up and make it work much better, and do so with very little effort on your part. ? System Mechanic 11 ?(srp. $49.99) and System Mechanic Pro., (Srp. $69.95) ?by Iolo Technologies, are the latest and greatest of these software programs. ?Introduced in 1998, System Mechanic has been used by nearly 40 million people worldwide to optimize over ?75 million computers. In fact, the company says that it is the #1 best-selling PC tune-up software in the US, Canada, UK, France and Benelux countries.

These software programs perform a 219-point diagnostic to see what is keeping your computer slow, and can do a lot to fix errors (over 13,000 of them), duplications, and other types of errors that make your computer hesitate and hang. Once these issues are discovered, they can be fixed, and by doing so, significantly improve your computer?s performance. Even new computers freeze up and crash, due to instabilities and other things.

What I personally liked about System Mechanic is that once it is installed (that took a little while, but wasn?t difficult), you can access it to do things without being a computer genius. Everything is explained, in plain English, so you don?t make a mistake. ?The dashboard is not intimidating! This means I felt like I could use it with confidence, and would continue to use it. ?It didn?t boost web speed 300% but it did boost my PC?s start time, and operating performance. To use it, you need a PC that uses Windows XP or above, 256 MB of RAM and 30 MB of hard disk space, and an internet connection, that?s about it.

Another?feature of System Mechanic is?AcceleWrite?.?This is??real-time, always-on technology that can actually optimize ?data storage as it happens. AcceleWrite works with both solid-state drives (SSDs) and traditional hard drives, eliiminating the need for tasks that take seemingly, forever, like disk defragmentation. ?The?System Mechanic 11 software is fueled by more than 30,000 independently identified solutions to common issues that arise from everyday computer use (delivered from iolo in the form of automatic weekly data updates).

There is malware and virus protection built into the software, although on my version of System Mechanic 11, I couldn?t get it to load. ?System Mechanic Pro also has enhanced memory processing, heuristic pattern matching, and reduced resource usage, System Shield ensures maximum protection while staying out of the way.

If you?re getting a new computer with Windows 8, you?ll be happy to know that System Mechanic 11 will run on all Microsoft operating systems from Windows XP to Windows 8. The new version is fully designed to effectively fix, optimize, and maintain issues unique to Windows 8, with added options and underlying research to keep the latest Windows iteration driver.

Another nice thing about System Mechanic is that they are generous with how you can use it. Buy it, and with??iolo?s Whole Home Licensing, non-commercial users can install and use the software on as many of their home computers as they own, without paying additional fees or running out of activations. ?Since most families have several devices, this is a big bonus. ?Another plus: ?if ??you already own System Mechanic, an upgrade to?System Mechanic 11 is automatically available at no charge to all existing users with an active service plan, which provides all products updates and upgrades, as well as continuous Tune-up Definitions updates. New or existing users without a service plan can purchase System Mechanic 11 directly from?www.iolo.com, via all major web e-tailers, or in one of more than 22,000 retail storefronts that carry iolo?s products worldwide, such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and Staples. ??For more information see?www.iolo.com.

My personal experience with my own, overworked, under-powered, over-stuffed computer was positive. Although as I mentioned earlier, I didn?t expect it to transform the performance of my computer, it did speed it up, and it did get rid of a lot of errors that I would never have known about, or have found, or could fix on my own. The end result was positive, well worth the money if you are really having computer performance issues. ?\

Although a gift of software that isn?t a video game won?t wow teenagers, but busy adults who don?t have time to waste waiting for their computer to react, will definitely appreciate this as a holiday gift. ?You?re not just giving the gift of a computer solution, you?re giving the gift of giving time back!

Rapid changes in climate don't slow some lizards

DURHAM, N.C. -- One tropical lizard's tolerance to cold is stiffer than scientists had suspected.

A new study shows that the Puerto Rican lizard Anolis cristatellus has adapted to the cooler winters of Miami. The results also suggest that this lizard may be able to tolerate temperature variations caused by climate change.

"We are not saying that climate change is not a problem for lizards. It is a major problem. However, these findings indicate that the thermal physiology of tropical lizards is more easily altered than previously proposed," said Duke biologist Manuel Leal, co-author of the study, which appears in the Dec. 6 issue of The American Naturalist.

Scientists previously proposed that because lizards were cold-blooded, they wouldn't be able to tolerate or adapt to cooler temperatures.

Humans, however, introduced Puerto Rican native A. cristatellus to Miami around 1975. In Miami, the average temperature is about 10 degrees Celsius cooler in winter than in Puerto Rico. The average summer temperatures are similar.

Leal and his graduate student Alex Gunderson captured A. cristatellus from Miami's Pinecrest area and also from northeastern Puerto Rico. They brought the animals back to their North Carolina lab, slid a thermometer in each lizard's cloaca and chilled the air to a series of cooler temperatures. The scientists then watched how easy it was for the lizards to right themselves after they had been flipped on their backs.

The lizards from Miami flipped themselves over in temperatures that were 3 degrees Celsius cooler than the lizards from Puerto Rico. Animals that flip over at lower temperatures have higher tolerances for cold temperatures, which is likely advantageous when air temperatures drop, Leal said.

"It is very easy for the lizards to flip themselves over when they are not cold or not over-heating. It becomes harder for them to flip over as they get colder, down to the point at which they are unable to do so," he said.

At that point, called the critical temperature minimum, the lizards aren't dead. They've just lost control of their coordination. "It is like a human that is suffering from hypothermia and is beginning to lose his or her balance or is not capable of walking. It is basically the same problem. The body temperature is too cold for muscles to work properly," he said.

Leal explained that a difference of 3 degrees Celsius is "relatively large and when we take into account that it has occurred in approximately 35 generations, it is even more impressive." Most evolutionary change happens on the time scale of a few hundred, thousands or millions of years. Thirty-five years is a time scale that happens during a human lifetime, so we can witness this evolutionary change, he said.

The lizards' cold tolerance also "provides a glimpse of hope for some tropical species," Leal added, cautioning that at present scientists don't know how quickly tolerance to high temperatures -- another important consequence of climate change -- can evolve.

He and Gunderson are now working on the heat-tolerance experiments, along with tests to study whether other lizard species can adjust to colder temperatures.

Add Cultured Whey to DIY Condiments to Make Them Last Longer in Your Fridge

Add Cultured Whey to DIY Condiments to Make Them Last Longer in Your FridgeWe've showed you how to make homemade versions of ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, and Sriracha, all of which are awesome but normally only last for a few days up to a couple of weeks in the fridge before becoming unsafe. Lengthen that timeline by adding cultured whey.

Culinary weblog Eating Rules notes that making DIY condiments is great, but it's frustrating that they have such a limited shelf life; who wants to make a batch of mayo every time you have a sandwich? Instead they hope to reintroduce readers to the art of culturing foods aka fermentation. You basically introduce naturally occurring bacterias, such as those found in yogurt, to a food and those bacterias convert sugars in the food to lactic acid or alcohol. A simple way to culture most DIY condiments is to add a bit of whey from plain yogurt. You know when you open a cup of yogurt that's been sitting in your fridge for a while and it has a clear yellow-ish liquid on top? That's whey. Any organic non-Greek yogurt will have all the positive bacteria you need to culture your condiments.

Line a colander with a dish towel, place that over a bowl, and pour the jar of yogurt on the dish towel to sit for eight hours. The whey will strain through the towel into the bowl and the leftover yogurt will have a consistency more like Greek yogurt. You can store this whey in a glass jar with a towel cover for months in your fridge. When you make a condiment and want it to last longer add four tablespoons of whey to the condiment, mix, and place in a glass jar. Let it sit on your counter at room temperature for two to four days which will allow time for the bacteria to do its work. When done, place the condiment back in your fridge and use as needed for up to three months. Best of all, this process adds nutritional value to your food?the bacteria helps with digestion and increases some vitamin and enzyme levels.

Decree by Egypt's Mursi raises rights concerns: U.N

GENEVA (Reuters) - Kris Kristofferson -- Oxford scholar, athlete, U.S. Army helicopter pilot, country music composer, one-time roustabout, film actor, singer, lover of women, three times a husband and father of eight -- seems ready to meet his maker. At least, that was the clear impression he left with an audience of middle-aged-and-upwards fans at a concert in Geneva this week, a message underscored by his 28th and latest album, "Feeling Mortal" and its coffin-dark cover. ...
