Woz likes Windows Phone more than Android, thinks Steve Jobs was reincarnated at Microsoft

Apple's eccentric co-founder and longtime gadgetphile, Steve Wozniak, decided to get himself a shiny new Nokia Lumia 900 so he could have a bit of a play with Windows Phone and... he likes it. And this should surprise precisely no one. It's a great new phone and Woz tries every great new phone that comes off the assembly line (he has a chair reserved at the end of the conveyer belt, we're told).

Switched On: Big kicks not all for starters

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

Image

The end of last week's Switched On left doubt for the future of dedicated devices that tread on the turf of smartphones. After all, funding is key to every major new product initiative and, despite the vast fortunes of many Silicon Valley engineers that have been accumulated via IPOs and acquisitions, few wish to take on the risk of fronting a new consumer device themselves.(In 2007, the handheld FlipStart PC was hatched from FlipStart Labs, funded by Vulcan Ventures, the investment arm of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.)

Most venture capitalists abhor the device business; it is a rare device that makes it to the spotlight of startup debutante balls such as DEMO, TechCrunch Disrupt, or Launch. Even most of the 94 companies at CES' Eureka Park were not developing end-user devices Where, then, can a device entrepreneur go for funding and pick up some publicity in the process?

Sony?s Gamer-Friendly Xperia Play Could Have Had A Real QWERTY Keyboard Too

playphone1Sony's Android-powered Xperia Play debuted to mixed reviews last year, but according to a newly published patent, Sony was apparently toying with the idea of making something much more interesting before settling on the design they ran with. Not content with a single physical keypad meant strictly for gaming, the images associated with the patent depict a Sony smartphone with two of them -- one with the game controls we've become familiar with, and another with a full QWERTY keyboard that would slide down over the game pad.

event-1Online ticketing platform Eventbrite is debuting a new vertical today, called Endurance, which focuses specifically on selling tickets for races and walks, including marathons, triathlons, races, fundraising walks, and more. As you may know, Eventbrite, which has sold 57 million tickets and hosted over 500,000 events in the past year, has been used as a registration and ticketing platform for a broad range of events, from large fundraisers, festivals, tech conferences, and concerts to cooking classes and HTML workshops. Josh Barnett: ?I was born for this?

On May 19, Josh Barnett will take on Daniel Cormier to decide the winner of the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix. When he walks into that cage, he'll bring with him the experience of 36 fights, including eight wins in his last eight bouts. In the video above, he says he was born to fight, and has a mean streak no one else has. Will that make a difference against Cormier, who has elite wrestling and knockout power? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.
