Evidence tossed at start of papal butler's trial

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? The pope's once-trusted butler went on trial Saturday for allegedly stealing papal documents and passing them off to a journalist in the worst security breach of the Vatican's recent history ? a case that embarrassed the Vatican and may shed further light on the discreet, internal workings of the papal household.

In its first hearing in the case, the three-judge Vatican tribunal threw out some evidence gathered during the investigation of butler Paolo Gabriele, who is charged with aggravated theft. It also decided to separate Gabriele's trial from that of his co-defendant, a computer expert charged with aiding and abetting the crime.

Gabriele is accused of taking the pope's correspondences, photocopying the documents and handing them to Italian journalist Gianluigi Nuzzi, whose book "His Holiness: The secret papers of Pope Benedict XVI," was published to great fanfare in May.

Prosecutors have said Gabriele confessed to taking the documents because he wanted to expose the "evil and corruption" in the church. They quoted him as saying during an interrogation that he felt inspired by the Holy Spirit to inform the pope about the church's problems and that a "shock, even a media one, would have been healthy to bring the church back on the right track."

Nuzzi on Saturday wished Gabriele well, tweeting "Good Luck, courageous Paoletto, we're with you." He referred to Gabriele by the diminutive nickname used by the pope and other members of the papal household.

The trial inside the intimate, austere courtroom was the highest-profile case to come before the Vatican judiciary since the 1929 founding of the Vatican city state, the world's smallest sovereign state. Media from around the world converged on St. Peter's Square to cover the case, which has attracted attention not so much because of the content of the documents but because they were stolen from the pope's desk and leaked, allegedly by one of Benedict's closest assistants.

On Saturday, the court said the pope's personal secretary, Monsignor Georg Gaenswein, had been called as a witness, testimony that is sure to attract attention given that Gaenswein rarely speaks in public much less about the details of the tight-knit papal family of which Gabriele formed part.

Other witnesses include one of the four consecrated women who take care of the pope's apartment, a monsignor in the Vatican secretary of state, the No. 2 Swiss Guard commander and the head of the Vatican police force.

Judge Giuseppe Dalla Torre set the next hearing for Tuesday, when Gabriele will be questioned. He said he thought the whole trial could be wrapped up in four more hearings.

Gabriele faces up to four years in prison if he is convicted. He has already asked to be pardoned by the pope, something most Vatican watchers say is a given.

Gabriele, 46, appeared calm but tense during the 2 hour, 15 minute hearing, frequently crossing his hands or clasping them in his lap. He wore a light gray suit and tie.

He sat alone on a bench on one side of the courtroom, following the proceedings impassively. During a break in the hearing, he chatted with his attorney, Cristiana Arru, and greeted journalists with a nod and a smile as he entered and exited.

Arru raised a series of objections at the start of the hearing, only some of which were accepted by the court. One concerned two jailhouse conversations Gabriele had with the head of the Vatican police force without his lawyers present. The judges declared both inadmissible. The content isn't public.

Arru also sought access to the report of a commission of cardinals appointed by the pope to investigate the leaks alongside Vatican magistrates. The court denied the request.

The attorney for co-defendant Claudio Sciarpelletti successfully petitioned to have his client's trial separated from that of Gabriele. Sciarpelletti wasn't in the court Saturday and his trial date wasn't set.

Neither Gabriele's wife nor any of his three children attended the hearing. Space for the public was limited; eight of the 18 seats were taken up by the journalists who followed the proceedings and then briefed the rest of the Vatican press corps afterward.

The courtroom itself was spare, with wood paneling along the walls, a gilded crest of the Holy See in the ceiling, a photograph of Benedict over the prosecutor's chair and a crucifix over the chair of the presiding judge. It's located in a four-story palazzo tucked behind St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican gardens.

Security was relaxed, with the guards at the tribunal entrance mostly concerned that none of the press or public brought in any recording devices: They even checked pens to make sure they couldn't record, and sequestered cell phones into safe boxes. No television or still cameras were allowed, except for Vatican media which filmed the first moments at the start of the hearing.

Given the content of the leaks and the Vatican's penchant for secrecy, the fact that the trial was open to the public and media might seem unusual. In fact, such trials in the Vatican's civil and penal tribunal are routinely public. They just don't happen very often or attract much attention. The Vatican's ecclesial courts on the other hand, which handle marriage annulments, clerical sex abuse cases and other matters of church law, remain firmly off-limits to outsiders.

In some ways, the willingness of the Vatican to proceed with the trial at all is an indication of its efforts to show new transparency in its inner workings. Benedict could have pardoned Gabriele as soon as he was arrested or charged, precluding any trial from getting off the ground. Instead he allowed the trial to go ahead, evidence of the "courage" the Vatican is showing to be more transparent, Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi has said.

He called such transparency unprecedented for the Vatican and likened it to the Holy See's recent decision to submit its financial institutions to outside scrutiny by the Council of Europe's Moneyval committee.

Here Are The Singers Competing In Next Week?s ?American Idol For The Geek Set?

silicon valley voice logoEarlier this month, I wrote about Silicon Valley Voice, a karaoke competition for the tech world hosted by Silicon Valley Bank and Coverflow (a cover band made up of techies including Mayfield Fund's Tim Chang, Facebook's Ethan Beard, and Fandalism's Philip Kaplan). Now, the finalists have been selected, and you don't even have to wait until next week's event to hear them sing. Coverflow member (and Mayfield managing director) Raj Kapoor ?tells me that all of the regular tickets have sold out, with 800 RSVPs. But the organizers convinced Silicon Valley Bank to expand the budget, which means there's room for another 200 people.

MidAmerican to buy 2 Calif. wind farms

MidAmerican Energy has agreed to buy two wind projects under construction about 120 miles north of Los Angeles from the wind developer Terra-Gen Power.

Terms of the sale were not disclosed.

The two projects, totaling 300 megawatts of peak electric capacity, will be part of the larger Alta Wind Energy Center located in Tehachapi, Calif., much of which is already in operation.

MidAmerican, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway Inc., said Sunday it will sell the electricity to Southern California Edison under long-term power purchase agreements.

In typical conditions, the projects will produce enough electricity to meet the demand of about 80,000 homes.

MidAmerican Energy Holdings Co. serves electric customers in Iowa, Illinois, South Dakota and Nebraska and it also controls a subsidiary called MidAmerican Renewables that operates wind, solar, geothermal and hydro-electric plants and sells that power to other utilities. Terra-Gen Power is a private company based in New York City.

Wind developers are scrambling to get wind projects underway this year in order to qualify for a federal wind subsidy that is slated to expire at the end of the year. President Barack Obama wants Congress to extend the subsidy but his Republican challenger Mitt Romney and some members of Congress want to allow it to lapse.

Wind power has struggled to compete in recent years because low natural gas prices have made reduced wholesale electric power prices, reducing the amount of revenue a wind turbine can generate. Without the federal subsidy, construction of wind projects is expected to slow dramatically, at least until power prices begin to rise.

The wind subsidy, known as the production tax credit, is worth $22 for every megawatt-hour of electricity generated by a wind farm during its first 10 years of operation. For MidAmerican's new wind farms, that would amount to about $19 million per year, or $190 million in total.

Bosnia Warns Syria May Become 'New Srebrenica' :: Balkan Insight

Izetbegovic, Bosniak [Muslim] member of the country's tripartite presidency, told the UN General Assembly that the international community ?failed? to handle the crisis in eastern Bosnia in July 1995 - and was in danger of repeating the same error in Syria.

?The best way to honour the victims of Srebrenica is to learn from the mistakes. Unfortunately, the UN has failed to do that," he said.

"The international community has once again chosen the ?trial and error? policy, which failed in Bosnia,? Izetbegovic added.

?[The use of] resolutions, statements of concern, ineffectual sanctions, observers and lack of a clear mandate to protect civilians ? which result in deaths ? was demonstrated in my country," he recalled.

"Do not make this mistake. If we don't act now, decisively, to help the Syrian people and stop the bloodshed, this tragedy will haunt us, just like Srebrenica,? he continued.
?
Izetbegovic was referring to the mass slaughter of Bosniaks that occured under the noses of the UN in the besieged eastern Bosnian town of Srebrenica in July 1995.

Although the town was a UN-declared demilitarized zone, Bosnian Serb forces under General Ratko Mladic attacked and overran the town and killed more than 7,000 people.

The International Court of Justice in a ruling in 2007 qualified the massacre as an act of genocide.

At the time of the Bosnian Serb attack, a UN Dutch battalion was stationed in Srebrenica, but it did not stop the slaughter. ?

Izetbegovic said that all UN member states were obliged to help the Syrian people in their quest for freedom.

?Once more we stand idly by while a human tragedy is going on. We must save the Syrian people from tyranny. We must, but we do not," he said.

"The images we are seeing from Syria remind us of the Bosnian tragedy. We in Bosnia and Herzegovina feel the pain the Syrian people as our own, because we too went through the same horrors,? Izetbegovic added.

The Bosnian presidency member recalled that the former and current UN General Secretaries, Kofi Annan and Ban Ki-Moon, had visited Srebrenica to pay homage to the victims, and both men had said that such events should never be permitted in future. ?

?Today, these words ring with the sounds of the failure of this organization [the UN] to respond to the Syrian tragedy,? he maintained.

Speaking about the future of his own country, Izetbegovic stated that it was ?vital to protect the mosaic of ethnicities and cultures? in Bosnia.

?There is a great fight on now between the forces of reconciliation and division in my country today... [and] if the idea of reconciliation does not prevail in Bosnia, then it will have a hard time doing so anywhere else,? he concluded.

There is no settled international consensus on the desirability of direct intervention in the crisis in Syria.

While some Gulf states openly support rebel forces, the government in Damascus has retained strong support from China, Russia and Iran.

Builders offer?home buyers?credit rehab

Joe Raedle / Getty Images

Lennar Corp, whose sign is displayed in front of a home above, is among a number of homebuilders benefiting from putting buyers on fiscal rehab.

By Michelle Conlin, Reuters

In the post-housing crash world, Kelly and Jeff Clark are the kind of people who are not supposed to be able to buy a house.

For a down payment, they had exactly nothing. Their credit scores were sub-par. But this Christmas, the Clarks will move from their rundown rental into a brand new, four-bedroom home in an amenity-loaded development outside of Lakeland, Florida. All without paying a dime.

The Clarks were able to qualify for a mortgage because their builder, Southern Homes, spent the summer putting them through a financial boot camp. Bigger home builders such as D.R. Horton Inc, Lennar and PulteGroup Inc are also offering sophisticated financial advice to prospective home buyers who would not normally qualify for loans.

These fiscal rehabs are one reason many builders are boosting sales, even though mortgage lending is tight. Pulte said in July that its financial program could help its sales for some time. On Monday, Lennar Corp said revenue from home sales rose 33 percent last quarter from the same quarter a year earlier. Orders for homes rose 44 percent, helped by the 25 percent increase in membership in its Homebuyers Club since last year.

Providing financial therapy solves a huge problem for the builders: How to sell to first-time home buyers when s o many yo unger consumers a re s a ddled wi th student debt and ba d c redit.

The financial advisors go by names such as "mortgage advisors," "credit advocates" or "loan officers." They help prospective customers create budgets and slash spending. Both D.R. Horton and Lennar also help out with "credit repair," the practice of analyzing credit reports to determine the best stra t egies for raising scores as quickly as possible.

The buyers then get mortgages from the builders' own, in-house lending arms.

But consumer advocates say there is an obvious conflict when doling out financial advice. Instead of helping prospective customers maximize wealth, advocates say builders' advisors could be trying to suck as much money as possible out of buyers' pockets.

"What it does is create a captive consumer where the builder can charge a lot more," said Douglas Miller, executive director of Consumer Advocates in American Real Estate, a nonprofit.

?

Homebuilders are often helping buyers get government-backed loans that require no down payment, or a low down payment, so taxpayers could be on the hook if buyers can't repay their mortgages. Some consumer experts fear that, just five years after the biggest housing meltdown in generations, builders are up to their old tricks again.

"You have people applying for loans that there's no way they can pay, but it doesn't matter because the ability to repay isn't the basis of the loan. It's the ability to pass underwriting so the loan can be sold," says Washington, D.C.-based bankruptcy attorney, Brett Weiss.

Builders say they are putting people in homes they can afford and helping them achieve their dreams. Most loans that banks are underwriting now meet stringent government standards.

For buyers with enough cash and income, buying a home can lower monthly housing costs because mortgage rates are at r ecord lows an d rents are surging. Monthly mortgage costs are lower than rent in nearly every major U.S. metro area now, according to John Burns Real Estate Consulting.

Call whenever
Last year, executives at PulteGroup found that nearly 90 percent of younger buyers wanted to own a home. They loathed throwing away money on rent each month.

"The dream of American home ownership has not died at all," said Pulte Vice President of marketing Fred Ehle. "It was somewhat of a surprise to us."

But Gen X and Yers also had reservations about buying so soon after watching the housing market crash and burn. T hey also feared they would not qualify for a mortgage.

Just five years after the biggest housing meltdown in generations, that's led some consumer experts to fear that builders are up to their old tricks again.

The number of people aged 25-to-34 who bought homes in 2011 fell to 27 percent, the lowest share in the past decade, according to the National Association of Realtors. Rising student debt has played at least some role in that decline, analysts said. According to the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, about 50 percent of young people that started college in 2003 were paying more than 10 percent of their income on student debt.

In response, Pulte launched a mortgage advisor program, whose members are buying houses at twice the rate of prospective purchasers who do not participate.

The advisors hand-hold customers through the entire home process, from picking the floor plan to arranging the mortgage to taking as many calls as necessary to assuage fears.

"I could call whenever I needed to with whatever I needed," says program member Erin Shafer, a 23-year-old school teacher who is buying a new home, along with her fianc?, in Woodstock, Illinois.

The couple have student debt, but they had enough for a down payment due to a relative's recent death. Pulte is giving them $5,000 for closing costs, $3,000 worth for free appliances and a mortgage.

The incubator
The Clarks thought they would remain renters forever. But early in the summer, a friend recommended that they meet with Janet Backman, a grandmotherly sales agent for Southern Homes.

During that first meeting, Backman pored over the Clarks' financials and decided to put them in what she calls her "Incubator."

That's the process Backman uses to convert the credit-challenged into home buyers within a matter of months. It drives her crazy that people in her area pay more to rent then to own.

The Clarks had no credit cards and paid for everything with cash. So as Backman talked with them that first day, she simultaneously signed them up for credit cards on the Capital One website.

Then she told the couple that, if they made $50 worth of purchases each month, but only paid the balance down to $25, their credit scores would likely rise immediately.

Within a month, Backman got the couple's scores up enough to qualify for the zero-down government-backed loan she secured for them through a partner lender.

Southern Home's sales agents have sold 162 homes so far this year, with nearly all getting similar advice and loan terms.

Says Backman: "Every time I hear about how hard it is to purchase a home, I'm thinking, what planet are they living on?"

Apple?s Whole Hardware History In A 3-Minute Video

apple-gallery10_1470400bApple has made a lot of stuff, like a lot. One enterprising fan, August Brandels, has created a three-and-a-half minute video that provides a good overview of most of that stuff, cut from various Apple commercials and promotional spots, and tied to a pulse-pounding soundtrack that actually really leaves you feeling fired up. The video isn't chronological and it doesn't include everything, but for long-time Apple fans, it's a nice trip down memory lane that brings you right up to the present with the iPhone 5 and Retina MacBook Pro.

Deep Sea Fishing Charters is a luxurious sport for those who have enough resources and even more so, courage to explore the depth of the ocean floor and water in search for the greatest catch. Even though it is considered that amateurs can do just as well as professionals, the knowledge of the depth, or more widely known as the Photic zone, is considered as an invaluable material for those who plan to begin to go fishing for deep sea water fish species. The amazement from only knowing the name of the fish is delightful. Catching fish with awesome names, such as, the cookiecutter shark, lanternfish, flashlight fish, and anglerfish is an awesome feeling. It is, however, essential to know which species goes into rare or endangered categories to avoid excessive fishing.

If you want to start getting into the hobby but have no idea what to do, let us just start by knowing what deep sea fishing charters are. Deep sea fishing charters are boats that are rented by a company or an individual that will take tourists into an expedition out in the ocean to get deep sea fishing experience. It is, however, necessary to check which company or individual offer their services in which area of the ocean. It is to make sure that you will get the experience you actually plan on having. During the service of the charters, the customers can decide and opt for the service they prefer, to participate in bottom fishing or trolling, for example. You can have a flexible planning and enjoyable activities all at the same time. When the experience of one activity is not going where you expect it goes, you can have just another type of activities and the charters will provide them for you.

There are a lot of places where people can get deep sea fishing charters and the services they provide. In United States, there are many interesting and exotic places that offer such services and companies or individuals that provide you with such experiences. Some popular deep sea fishing charters has been developed around Florida like Pensacola, Key Largo, Tampa Bay, and Key West. Some additional opportunities in deep sea fishing can be found in New Hampshire; Biloxi, Mississippi; New Jersey;Charleston, South Carolina;Hawaii; Orange Beach, Alabama; British Columbia; the Gulf of Mexico and Cape Cod and. More out of ordinary destinations for deep sea fishing include the Bahamas, Phuket and Mexico.

There are several things to consider before picking deep sea fishing charters. The first thing is why you need a charter for. Some charters will offer a pleasant casual experience like whale watching and others might offer some things professionals might need like bottom dweller fishing. Just make sure that the services you require are exactly the services the charters will cater you with. Some charters might be suitable for first timers and some others might cater to the need of professional deep sea fishing enthusiasts.

The types of the fish might also matter. What kind of fish do you opt to get? Are you looking for a snapper? or is it Tuna fishing during a Tuna season that becomes your aim from the first time? Do you need the adrenaline from rushing to hunt a Barracuda or is a simple photographic experience from whale watching sufficient? Make sure that you go the suitable deep sea fishing charters that will cater to your very need. The price and duration are other things to consider. Do you plan to take weekend plan and go for a relaxing experience? or do you have a limited budget so you plan to take the economic package which can span for one to three days journey? If you are a professional, you might want to opt for the specific plan like summer high speed trolling, especially when you want to get larger game fish like bull dolphin, yahoo, and sailfish.

Theater seeks dismissal of lawsuits in Colorado mass shooting

DENVER (Reuters) - A theater chain being sued by three Colorado moviegoers who were hurt when a gunman opened fire during a July screening of the "Dark Knight Rises" said on Thursday the lawsuits should be dismissed, court papers show.

James Holmes, a 24-year-old former neuroscience graduate student at the University of Colorado, has been charged with murder and attempted murder for the rampage that killed 12 people and wounded 58 others.

Lawyers for Cinemark USA are seeking dismissal of the lawsuits filed last week in Denver federal court by the victims, who said the theater had lax security.

"It would be patently unfair, and legally unsound, to impose on Cinemark, a private business in the entertainment industry, the duty and burden to have foreseen and prevented the criminal equivalent of a meteor falling from the sky," the motion said.

Texas-based Cinemark argued that because its employees did not know the accused shooter and were not trained in law enforcement or criminal pathology, "the fault here lies entirely with the killer."

Attorneys for the victims could not immediately be reached for comment.

The three victims said in their lawsuit the theater should have had more security in place because it was aware of previous crimes in or near the theater, including "assaults and robberies" and at least one gang shooting.

Cinemark disputed the assertion about a previous gang shooting, but noted that even if true, "such an event would be insufficient to make a madman's mass murder foreseeable."

Images show how nickel, which enhances battery capacity, also appears to hinder charging rates

RICHLAND, Wash. -- Anyone who owns an electronic device knows that lithium ion batteries could work better and last longer. Now, scientists examining battery materials on the nano-scale reveal how nickel forms a physical barrier that impedes the shuttling of lithium ions in the electrode, reducing how fast the materials charge and discharge. Published last week in Nano Letters, the research also suggests a way to improve the materials.

The researchers, led by the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Chongmin Wang, created high-resolution 3D images of electrode materials made from lithium-nickel-manganese oxide layered nanoparticles, mapping the individual elements. These maps showed that nickel formed clumps at certain spots in the nanoparticles. A higher magnification view showed the nickel blocking the channels through which lithium ions normally travel when batteries are charged and discharged.

"We were surprised to see the nickel selectively segregate like it did. When the moving lithium ions hit the segregated nickel rich layer, they essentially encounter a barrier that appears to slow them down," said Wang, a materials scientist based at EMSL, the Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a DOE user facility on PNNL's campus. "The block forms in the manufacturing process, and we'd like to find a way to prevent it."

Lithium ions are positively charged atoms that move between negative and positive electrodes when a battery is being charged or is in use. They essentially catch or release the negatively charged electrons, whose movement through a device such as a laptop forms the electric current.

In lithium-manganese oxide electrodes, the manganese and oxygen atoms form rows like a field of cornstalks. In the channels between the stalks, lithium ions zip towards the electrodes on either end, the direction depending on whether the battery is being used or being charged.

Researchers have known for a long time that adding nickel improves how much energy the electrode can hold, battery qualities known as capacity and voltage. But scientists haven't understood why the capacity falls after repeated usage -- a situation consumers experience when a dying battery holds its charge for less and less time.

To find out, Wang, materials scientist Meng Gu and their collaborators used electron microscopy at EMSL and the National Center for Electron Microscopy at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to view how the different atoms are arranged in the electrode materials produced by Argonne National Laboratory researchers. The electrodes were based on nanoparticles made with lithium, nickel, and manganese oxides.

First, the team took high-resolution images that clearly showed rows of atoms separated by channels filled with lithium ions. On the surface, they saw the accumulation of nickel at the ends of the rows, essentially blocking lithium from moving in and out.

To find out how the surface layer is distributed on and within the whole nanoparticle, the team used a technique called three-dimensional composition mapping. Using a nanoparticle about 200 nanometers in size, they took 50 images of the individual elements as they tilted the nanoparticle at various angles. The team reconstructed a three-dimensional map from the individual elemental maps, revealing spots of nickel on a background of lithium-manganese oxide.

The three-dimensional distribution of manganese, oxygen and lithium atoms along the surface and within the particle was relatively even. The nickel, however, parked itself in small areas on the surface. Internally, the nickel clumped on the edges of smaller regions called grains.

To explore why nickel aggregates on certain surfaces, the team calculated how easily nickel and lithium traveled through the channels. Nickel moved more easily up and down the channels than lithium. While nickel normally resides within the manganese oxide cornrows, sometimes it slips out into the channels. And when it does, this analysis showed that it flows much easier through the channels to the end of the field, where it accumulates and forms a block.

The researchers used a variety of methods to make the nanoparticles. Wang said that the longer the nanoparticles stayed at high temperature during fabrication, the more nickel segregated and the poorer the particles performed in charging and discharging tests. They plan on doing more closely controlled experiments to determine if a particular manufacturing method produces a better electrode.

This work was supported by PNNL's Chemical Imaging Initiative.

Playoff dream officially ends for?Pirates

updated 10:37 p.m. ET Sept. 26, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - David Wright's record-breaking hit was a little dribbler toward third base, ugly enough to prompt plenty of ribbing from his New York Mets teammates.

"I don't think he really wanted that particular hit to be the one played over and over again," pitcher Jeremy Hefner said, drawing laughs.

Wright set the franchise record for hits and Hefner bounced back from a horrendous start in a 6-0 victory over Pittsburgh on Wednesday night that eliminated the Pirates from playoff contention.

Ruben Tejada tied a career high with four hits, including two RBI singles, and Scott Hairston doubled home a run as the Mets took advantage of some shoddy Pittsburgh defense to win for the fifth time in six games.

"Obviously, it's humbling," Wright said. "A little more exciting - we won today."

Jeff Locke (0-3) was chased in the fourth inning and is still searching for his first major league win after nine starts. The loss left Pittsburgh 7 1/2 games behind St. Louis, with seven to play, in the race for the second NL wild card.

Tied for the NL Central lead a week after the All-Star game, the Pirates have faded quickly in the second half for the second consecutive year. They have dropped 19 of 25 and must go 5-2 the rest of the way to avoid a 20th straight losing season.

Earlier on Wednesday, club president Frank Coonelly said manager Clint Hurdle and GM Neal Huntington will be back next season.

"Support's always good, absolutely," Hurdle said.

Wright reached on an infield single during a four-run third for his 1,419th hit, snapping a tie with Ed Kranepool atop the team's career list.

"I got a chance to show off my blazing speed," Wright said. "Ten years from now, when I'm telling my kids, it's going to be a line drive. It's going to be a little different. But I'll take it. A hit's a hit, and just really excited I could do it at home. The fans were great to me."

The slugger pulled into second base thanks to a throwing error on the play and his achievement was shown on the Citi Field scoreboard. The Mets played a few of Wright's highlights on the big video board, including his first major league hit. He received a warm ovation and quickly waved twice to the skimpy crowd of 22,890 before flashing a wide smile toward the New York dugout.

After the game, Wright's television interview on the field was played throughout the ballpark so the crowd could hear it.

"To be able to do it here at home was extra special," he said.

A six-time All-Star, Wright accomplished the feat in 1,256 games from 2004-12. Kranepool played in 1,853 games from 1962-79.

"It's remarkable," said Mets manager Terry Collins, who had Wright autograph a ball for him. "It's a testament to his work ethic."

Kranepool and Wright posed for pictures together during batting practice.

"Eddie came and saw me before the game, wished me luck and just kind of reiterated the fact he's happy for me and excited for me, and that meant a lot to me," Wright said.

Mets fans get another chance to possibly enjoy a nice moment when knuckleballer R.A. Dickey tries for his 20th win Thursday afternoon against Pittsburgh in New York's home finale.

Hefner (3-7) faced seven batters without recording an out in his previous start, a 16-1 loss to Philadelphia last Thursday. This time, he was on top of his game.

The rookie right-hander allowed only three harmless singles, two to former New York City prep star Pedro Alvarez, over seven outstanding innings. Hefner matched a career high with seven strikeouts and walked just one. He also dropped down two sacrifice bunts that led to runs.

"Everybody in this room was here for his last start, saw his emotions, and saw that he was upset. He had something to prove tonight - that he can pitch here," Collins said. "I believe he showed everybody he belongs here. I was very, very happy for him."

Jeurys Familia finished up with two hitless innings.

In addition to his record-breaking hit, Wright lined a clean single to center in the fourth. Daniel Murphy and Kelly Shoppach each had an RBI single. Andres Torres had three of New York's 14 hits and scored twice.

Pirates star Andrew McCutchen, chasing the NL batting title, went 0 for 4. But he was happy to hear that Hurdle and Huntington will be back next season.

"Yeah, I suppose that's nice," McCutchen said. "Glad they're coming back. Don't have to worry about anybody going anywhere. So, I guess that's always a plus."

NOTES: Dickey's start was moved up a day so he could pitch at home. The last 20-game winner for the Mets was Frank Viola in 1990. "Obviously, there's something that looks pretty about that number," said Dickey, looking to improve his Cy Young Award credentials. ... Collins said there is probably a 70 percent chance that closer Frank Francisco (elbow tendinitis) is done for the season. Francisco hasn't pitched since Sept. 16. ... LHP Robert Carson had an MRI that showed a triceps tendon strain. He is day to day. "A huge sigh of relief for me and for him," Collins said. ... Wright also set franchise records for RBIs, runs and walks this season. The only other active players to lead their current club in career hits are Derek Jeter (Yankees), Todd Helton (Rockies) and Michael Young (Rangers). ... Pirates 2B Neil Walker (lower back) was out of the lineup again and could be shut down for the rest of the season, Hurdle said. ... Rookie LF Starling Marte showed off his powerful arm, throwing out Murphy at the plate by a wide margin.

How To Put Together Effective Personal Development Strategies ...

You can change your life forever and for the better when you change the way you think, this is the start when it comes to personal development. This article provides helpful tips to get you focused on your self improvement, while improving your life and how you live it.

TIP! Ultimate happiness may lie in assuming a manageable amount of risk. A lot of people find themselves stuck in their comfort zone, because they do not dare take risks and fear rejection.

To grow over the years, you have to have a great attitude. Living life under the burden of bad or negative attitudes will continue to hold you back, and in fact, will undo all your personal improvement efforts. Focus on the positive things in life and how they can help you reach your personal goals.

Start giving other people compliments. If you are kind to other people, you will be kind to yourself.

TIP! Create an emergency fund. It is not good to pile up credit card bills when an unexpected emergency pops up.

Stress is what often brings down happiness. When we are stressed out, it harms us mentally and physically. To start thinking clearly and reaching for calm, purposeful goals, destroy your mind?s stress. Have some time every day when you can relax and meditate in solitude. This refreshing time can improve your self-image and peace.

Many people often have goals that are too broad, when they are trying to grow through self improvement. Try to set a goal that is specific. If you define your goal clearly, it will be easier to achieve it.

TIP! Do you feel like you drink too much alcohol? The harmful ingredients in cigarettes can cause COPD, cancer and a huge list of other diseases. Your body is what you live in every day and therefore consideration for its well being should be a priority.

It?s possible to teach yourself how you can deal with difficult situations without becoming too emotional. Learning ways to maintain your composure when stressed will help boost your self-esteem, and help you triumph under any circumstance. Rhythmic deep breathing will help you regain control and remain self-assured.

It is impossible for you to properly care for the ones you love, unless you take care of yourself first. No matter how much progress you have made in your personal development, always make resting and restoring yourself a top priority.

TIP! Stop worrying. When you worry, you are imagining a horrible situation for yourself that has not yet come to pass, and probably never will.

Always be in a position to take note of any ideas you may have, no matter what your location. Carry a journal or diary with you, everywhere you go. Write down your thoughts in detail, and be sure to put it into action.

Don?t overexert yourself physically when you are trying to achieve your goal. You should always put forth your best effort, but you also need to stay within your limits. You should take care of yourself when you are working towards a goal. Trying to achieve a goal at the expense of your body?s well being is hurting your personal development.

TIP! Declaring lowliness is a crucial step in advancing in personal development. The more humble you are, realizing that there is room for growth, the more willing you are to gain knowledge.

Always aim to keep self-discipline a priority as you work on bettering yourself. Learn to maintain control over your thoughts and actions. Conquer desires of the flesh, such as, overeating, lust, greed and drunkenness. However, if you control yourself, these negative desires won?t affect your mental and physical health the way they have done in the past.

There is a great coach behind every champion. It is important to surround yourself with a positive mentor and coach. Everyone is supposed to help show the way to others. It can be difficult, if not downright impossible, for people to reach their goals without the advice and wisdom of experts. Everyone needs a great coach or teacher in their life.

TIP! Improving your life is closely tied to willpower, and a lot can be said for the karma you develop along the way. You should only want the best to happen for others.

Identify the biggest obstacle that is preventing you from succeeding. Sometimes, this can be a difficult job for you to see on your own. Once you can pinpoint your own weaknesses, it is easier to accept them, act on them, and change them. If you are successful in moving obstacles out of your way, you may find that your life?s path is easier to navigate.

One way to improve yourself is to discover and emphasize your strengths, while minimizing your weaknesses. Determine what is important to you. Value the things you love the most and make them very important.

TIP! When you feel anger start to boil over, stop before you react and count to ten. Take a deep breath and think of a peaceful place.

Now you have been given an opportunity to consider several ways to change your negative thinking habits, and work on any character flaws preventing you from living your life to it?s fullest potential. Using these easy tips can help you get started with your personal development, and how to change yourself and your life for the better

Great Self Improvement Tips That Can Help You Reach Your Goals ...

It?s smart to help yourself and make proactive choices that can change your life. This can help you think on where to start in making great changes when it comes to your life. All you should know is where to begin to help yourself.

Understand what you want from your life. Following through is the next step. Not taking action to change your life just means you?ll be stuck with your current one forever. You need to create and implement a plan of action in order to realize your desires.

TIP! Instead of focusing on your own achievements, ask others about theirs. This gives you an opportunity to find out the talents and achievements of the people around you, and it might help you gain more respect for others as you learn more about their character.

As you begin your personal development journey, accept that fact that you truly do deserve the best of everything! Know that you owe it to yourself to do your best. When you complete your journey you?ll be secure in the knowledge that you did the best you could and no regrets are necessary.

One great personal development goal you can set is to practice being more selfless. You can strengthen your inner character by using self-sacrificing behavior, to help better other people?s lives. When you can balance sacrificing for others with meeting your own needs, you will gain the emotional versatility required to become a better person.

Remaining humble will always benefit you. We are but a cog in our universe. Remember to learn from other people and keep in mind that you don?t know everything. Keep this in mind and open yourself to the ability to learn from others. By keeping an open mind in all situations, you can let others teach you.

TIP! Take the time to read what has helped others to be who they want to be. Learn from their mistakes and think about following a similar path if your goals correspond to theirs.

You may find it helpful to discuss your issues with a counselor or other trusted professional, such as your pastor. These professionals are equipped to discuss very deep, emotional issues and often have many years of experience. Counselors and pastors are ready and willing to listen to you and help you work on your problems. By speaking with a professional about your problems, you can lead a much healthier and enjoyable life.

Overreacting to a situation will cause you unnecessary stress. Relax, sit back and analyze your situation without overreacting. If you make a mistake, you can always fix it or deal with it. When you start feeling anxious about a situation, focus on the positive things, not the negative ones.

Sexual capitol is a new trait researchers have just discovered, and they feel it is important to have. Sexual capitol does not mean employing your sexuality as a tool in procuring what you want out of life. This means to use charisma instead. While some may not have the best social skills, developing sexual capital will help you in many aspects in your life.

TIP! Having a degree and the ability to do the job is usually more important than which school you attended. Some places, such as banks and investment firms, actually do care where you got your degree.

Check out a few popular books on developmental techniques that you find particularly interesting. A really good book on the subject may set you on a course that will change your life. Before you pick a book, read the reviews to make sure that it is worthwhile because some self improvement books are better than others.

You should feel comfortable in your own skin and being the person that you are. Employ your skills, talents and abilities to make your self improvement program successful. Rather than worrying about the skills you don?t have, concentrate instead on the skills you do possess, and the success you can achieve with them.

Reduce the stress in your life. Do not over-react to setbacks: this will only cause you more stress. You have to understand things go wrong on occasion when you?re trying to achieve a goal. Instead of freaking out, you should come up with methods of overcoming the obstacle. It?s not the end of the world.

TIP! When thinking about your personal development goals, set what standards you think constitutes the best. Setting high standards for yourself can help you achieve personal development you desire.

Avoid shopping as a way to comfort yourself. Instead of shopping, spending money and adding more charges to your credit card bill, keep busy with a hobby. Not only will you have fewer debts to deal with, but your house will be less cluttered with stuff that you do not really need.

It is essential to have a clearly outlined goal, when working toward improving personal development. Therefore, state a goal for yourself that is detailed and specific. These are the kinds of goals that will get definite results.

You might?ve heard that listening can be as vital as speaking. This is particularly sage advice if you are working on your personal development. In fact, one of the most important people you should learn to listen to is yourself. Listening to what you tell yourself will help you know what you need and how to best improve yourself.

TIP! Try new things. Challenging yourself opens up a whole world of possibilities.

Always do the best you can. You should always want to be the best you can be. You will never be number one at anything, but we can try to be great. Try boosting your worth inside your field so that you can boost your self-esteem as well.

Organization is key if you expect to keep track of your progress. You can stay on track if you tackle small things first. A daily planner, online organizational software, or written journal can all provide great methods for tracking personal development goals.

Do not overdo it when you are trying to achieve your personal development goal. It is just as important to know when to stop as it is to try your hardest. You should take care of yourself when you are working towards a goal. Short-changing your body in order to meet personal development goals is a terribly counter-productive form of self-improvement.

TIP! Examine your inner self instead of your external appearance. It really does not matter what expensive clothing you wear, or if you look like someone from a magazine shoot.

The principles you believe in need to be put into practice. Every person?s identity rests on a set of beliefs that are vital to them. When your system is woven together with integrity, your confidence will rise when you put it into action. This also helps to make you a consistent person. This is an essential character trait.

So, as you have seen, it is true that self help requires research, work, and effort to start making changes that you can keep applying to your life. Personal development is a lifelong project that you can and should continue to enjoy. By using the tips from this article, you too can achieve a better life

Failure can be devastating to one?s ego when one is trying to better oneself through personal development. Treat failure as a chance to learn and grow. Failure is just one more way to become cognizant of your weaknesses and strengths. So, each failure needs to be a proud moment to you, as you now have another piece to your personal puzzle.

Values Matter Now

In his excellent book, What Matters Now, Gary Hamel lists five issues as paramount for whether an organization will thrive in the coming years:

>> values

>> innovation

>> adaptability

>> passion

>> ideology

For the next five weeks I want to address each of these from the perspective of selling. The first issue, values, determines a lot of what happens in the others, so we?ll start there.

When a company says it values their customers, the key issue is whether they are walking the talk. Does senior management actually have a program for measuring customer satisfaction? If not, how can they address this goal? We all know that you can?t improve what you can?t measure. Do they interact with customers on occasion and demonstrate their commitment to this stated value? Or do they rely on the sales manager and the outside sales force to handle this for them?

Do senior managers offer training for their sales force in how to understand business issues facing their customers? Do they teach their sellers how to have conversations with their customers at every level based on better understanding the customer?s priorities and goals? Do they help their sellers bring creative ideas and suggestions to the customer based on actual usage of products and services rather than marketing material?

If you value your customers, you invest in serving them better. While many companies are willing to spend some time and money on training for their outside sales people, many focus on technique rather than intent. If a seller lacks the ability to approach a customer with integrity as their guide, they will not be able to foster the trust and respect necessary for building a long-term successful customer base. If they lack the ability to understand and empathize with the customer?s business challenges, they bring less value to the customer than those who do.

And what about technical support? The inside sales staff? Credit and accounts receivable? Many times they have more day-to-day contact with the customer than the outside sales force, yet few companies invest in sales training for people providing these vital functions. When companies do invest in training these people in how to do their jobs with the value of customer satisfaction as their guide, the whole company benefits from the increased loyalty of the customer base.

I agree with Hamel that values are the number one priority for businesses who want to succeed, but those stated values must guide decisions from senior management down to the ?feet on the street? and the voice on the phone to create sustainable success.
