Mexico's leftists again question presidential vote

(AP) ? Pre-election polls on Mexico's presidential vote had projected that leftist presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador would lose by a double-digit margin.

But with 99 percent of the vote tallied in the preliminary count, Lopez Obrador of the Democratic Revolution Party trails by just six percentage points behind the election's apparent victor, Enrique Pena Nieto of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI.

The narrower-than-expected margin is fueling suspicion among Lopez Obrador's followers about the fairness of the vote, and he refused Monday night to concede defeat ? just as he did when he lost a razor-thin race in the 2006 presidential race and set off months of political unrest. Although this time, he has not called his followers into the streets to protest.

Lopez Obrador argued from the start of the campaign that pollsters were manipulating pre-election surveys to favor Pena Nieto as a way to boost the idea that the PRI candidate was far out in front.

Pollsters denied that, and said Monday that they suspected some voters changed their minds and switched to Lopez Obrador in the final week before Sunday's election. Mexican electoral law bans the publication of polls just before elections, something the polling firms said prevented them from getting a last-minute snapshot of voter sentiment.

The leftist candidate also complained throughout the campaign that biased media favored Pena Nieto, particularly Mexico's semi-monopolized television industry.

"The media sponsored Pena Nieto, they manipulated, they deceived," Lopez Obrador said at a news conference Monday evening. "This was a really dirty election."

Lopez Obrador said he would not accept the preliminary election results reported by the Federal Elections Institute and would wait until Wednesday, when the official results are to be announced, before deciding what he will do.

"We will not accept a fraudulent result," he said.

Lopez Obrador said he probably would challenge Sunday's vote results, but didn't say if he would try to repeat the nearly two months of street blockades in Mexico City that he led in 2006 to protest his close loss to President Felipe Calderon of the conservative National Action Party that the leftist also attributed to fraud.

Pre-election polls said Pena Nieto was favored by 32 percent to 41 percent of voters, while Lopez Obrador had support ranging from nearly 24 percent to 25 percent. Josefina Vazquez Mota of the National Action Party was third at around 19 percent or 21 percent.

IFE's preliminary vote count, however, has produced a much tighter contest. Pena Nieto leads with 38 percent of the votes, while Lopez Obrador is much closer than predicted with 32 percent and Vazquez Mota has 25 percent.

"To say that more than 200 polls, including some that were done by some polling companies he trusted, were manipulated is absurd," said Roy Campos, president of the polling firm Mitofsky.

Campos said polls estimated correctly in what place each of the candidates would finish. The gap between Lopez Obrador and Pena Nieto narrowed because at least one in nine voters changes his or her mind at the last minute, he said.

"There is definitely an effect toward the end that we are not able to measure because the last survey is done the weekend before the election," Campos said.

Jorge Buendia of the polling firm Buendia and Laredo also said it appeared that some voters who initially supported Pena Nieto changed their minds.

"Sometimes we forget that people often tell you a preference without being completely convinced," Buendia said. "But it's not up to us as pollsters, or democrats, to decide that a convinced vote is superior to a doubtful vote."

Supporters of Lopez Obrador, who narrowly lost the 2006 election by a half percentage point, say the polls were "propaganda" used against him and many are urging him to declare the election a fraud.

"We have a situation where the numbers were very different from what the propaganda of the polls was spreading for three months," Manuel Camacho Solis, a former Mexico City mayor who was among Lopez Obrador's campaign coordinators in 2006 and now leads an informal coalition of leftist parties, told reporters Monday.

"They first prescribed us a difference of 25 points, then of 20, and toward the last days of the campaign, and almost in a generous way, they were talking of 15 percentage points."

Hundreds of young people gathered Monday at a monument along Mexico City's main Reforma Avenue to protest Pena Nieto's victory, which they called the result of electoral fraud.

"The election results are being manipulated by the media," said Vladimir Cervantes, a 23-year-old university student. "We will resist so that they don't make the fraud official."

The students said they knew of at least 500 reports of irregularities that were captured in photos and video, including the buying of votes.

"What we want is for the truth to come up and to stop Pena Nieto from taking the presidency," Cervantes said.

No. 17 Florida at Florida State

Published: Saturday, June 30, 2012 at 6:01 a.m.
Last Modified: Thursday, June 28, 2012 at 7:24 p.m.

Gatorsports.com counts down the top 25 games in the SEC for the 2012 season.

NO. 17 FLORIDA AT FLORIDA STATE

When: Nov. 24

Where: Doak Campbell Stadium, Tallahassee, Fla.

Why it?s No. 17: This in-state game isn?t as sexy as it was in the 1990s, but it?s still a great rivalry. FSU should be in contention for an ACC title, while Florida is trying to get back to the top of the rough-and-tumble SEC after two down seasons.

Series History: Florida leads 33-21-2

Rivalry on scale of 1-100: 100. Gators and ?Noles may share family ties on Thanksgiving, but don?t be surprised if a few drumsticks are thrown across the table while talking about the upcoming Saturday game. Students and alumni from these two schools don?t like each other.

Rays' Price outpitches Verlander for 11th win

By FRED GOODALL

updated 10:24 p.m. ET June 29, 2012

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - David Price walked off the mound slowly, raising concern that the AL's first 11-game winner might be headed for a stint on the disabled list.

Tampa Bay's hard-throwing left-hander insisted that's not the case after outpitching Justin Verlander to beat the Detroit Tigers 4-2 on Friday night, stressing that the Rays' decision to remove him after seven innings because of lower back tightness was purely precautionary.

"I'll be fine," Price said, adding that he expects to make his next scheduled start.

The Rays beat Verlander, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, for the second time this season to end a four-game skid in which they played sloppy defense and struggled to score.

Price (11-4) allowed two runs and five hits before exiting after going out to the mound to warm up for the eighth inning. He threw 78 pitches, struck out seven and walked one.

Price said he felt some discomfort after throwing a fast ball to Prince Fielder in the seventh. When he returned to the dugout, Price put a heating pad on his back to try to stay loose.

"Any time a pitcher's going to tell me that the back is bothering him, I'm definitely going to take him out of the game," Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

"It just tightened up on me a little bit," Price added. "It's something we need to be careful with."

Price has won three straight decisions and five of six overall with the loss coming when the Rays were one-hit by R.A. Dickey of the New York Mets on June 13.

Jennings hadn't homered in over two months, yet went deep against Verlander (8-5) leading off the third and fifth innings. Ben Zobrist hit a solo homer off the Tigers starter, who struck out eight and walked one while throwing 120 pitches and allowing four runs and six hits over six innings.

"Not very good. You know the old saying, solo homers don't hurt you does not apply tonight, not when you give up three of them," Verlander said. "Just fell behind some guys and put them in fastball counts and they were able to take advantage of it."

Delmon Young hit a solo homer in the fifth and had two of Detroit's hits off Price. Fielder drove in the Tigers' other run when he grounded out in the seventh.

The Rays were outscored 26-8 during a losing streak that matched their longest of the season. Even more troubling has been that they have hurt themselves lately with uncharacteristic mistakes, especially on defense.

Jennings led a stellar defensive effort Friday night, making a nice running catch while falling into the stands in left field in the third inning. The Rays turned three double plays in support of Price. Jake McGee worked the eighth, and Fernando Rodney finished up, earning his 22nd save in 23 opportunities.

"Two outstanding pitchers going at it," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "Tonight, their guy got the best of it."

Despite walking Ramon Santiago in the first and yielding singles to Young in the second and Austin Jackson in the fourth, Price faced the minimum 12 batters over the first four innings - thanks to two inning-ending double plays and Jackson being thrown out attempting to steal second base.

Verlander, meanwhile, allowed three homers in a game for the first time this season. The New York Yankees went deep on the Tigers ace twice in beating him on April 27 and June 3, meaning that seven of the 10 homers Verlander has allowed this season have come in the four starts he has made against those teams.

"It's kind of like walking a tightrope because against a guy like Price you know you're not going to get many runs," Verlander said.

The promotion was so popular that the team has ordered 10,000 more dolls and plan to give them away at a future game. ... The Rays were one of the best defensive teams in baseball in making the playoffs three of the past four seasons, however they haven't been nearly as sharp this season. They have already committed 66 errors after having a major league-low 73 last year. They have had 18 multi-error games this year compared to 11 in 2011. ... Leyland said OF Andy Dirks (right Achilles tendinitis) was not cleared to resume baseball activities after being re-examined Friday. ... Rays RHP Jeremy Hellickson (right shoulder inflammation) is set to come off the 15-day DL and start Saturday night. The Tigers will counter with RHP Rick Porcello. Hellickson, the 2011 AL rookie of the year, missed two starts while on the DL.

Cardinals?avoid sweep, edge?Pirates

ST. LOUIS (AP) - Allen Craig homered for the second time in three days and All-Star Yadier Molina also connected as the Cardinals beat the Pirates 5-4 on Sunday.

Pittsburgh was trying to sweep a series of at least three games in St. Louis for the first time since 1997.

Jason Motte got the last four outs for his 17th save in 21 chances to end the Pirates' four-game winning streak. Motte was the last in a flurry of moves by rookie manager Mike Matheny that left three players seeing time at two positions.

Matt Holliday and Shane Robinson had an RBI apiece in a two-run fifth that gave the Cardinals the 5-4 lead.

Michael McKenry's three-run homer had capped a four-run fourth that put the Pirates ahead for the first time and also gave them a homer in nine straight games. They've totaled 15 homers in their longest streak since another nine-gamer in June 2008.

Pirates manager Clint Hurdle also was inventive with substitutions, using two players at two spots. Pedro Alvarez had two hits and a walk for the Pirates before coming out with apparent leg cramps after singling to start the eighth.

Jake Westbrook (7-6) beat the Pirates for the first time in six career decisions, allowing four runs in six innings. Westbrook has won three straight decisions.

Motte got the bullpen's biggest out when Josh Harrison popped out to shallow center with two on to end the eighth.

The Pirates also had a chance to tie it in the seventh, when Robinson dropped Garrett Jones' fly ball to center for a two-base error with two out and none. Given another chance during the next at-bat, Robinson secured the ball on pinch hitter Casey McGehee's routine fly ball against Mitchell Boggs.

The Pirates gave No. 3 hitter and All-Star Andrew McCutchen a day off after the center fielder left Saturday's game with a strained left wrist from making a diving catch. Cardinals All-Star Carlos Beltran also got a day off.

Erik Bedard (4-9) threw 100 pitches in 4 2-3 innings and gave up five runs. The lefty has allowed 25 runs in 23 2-3 innings, a 9.51 ERA, in his last five starts away from home since his last road victory May 3 in St. Louis.

In his last three starts in Pittsburgh, Bedard has given up just three runs in 19 innings.

NOTES: Bedard became the 13th active pitcher with 1,000 strikeouts when he caught Holliday looking in the first. ... McGehee is 6 for 13 as a pinch hitter with three RBIs. ... McKenry is 11 for 25 during a career-best seven-game hitting streak. ... Holliday is 26 for 53 with two homers and 14 RBIs in his last 13 games. ... Westbrook has a 5.18 ERA against the Pirates.
