Utah?s GOP attorney general race turns into furious fight

As one of the statewide Republican primary races, the attorney general?s contest has been the undercard to the primary battle between Sen. Orrin Hatch and Dan Liljenquist.

But the match between John Swallow and Sean Reyes has turned into a furious fight of its own ? featuring negative ads, contentious debates and a defamation of character lawsuit filed in court Friday by Reyes.

The two campaigns have already spent more than $1 million, but with just a few days until the primary, many are just now starting to look at which GOP candidate will ultimately challenge Democrat Dee Smith in November.

For those who have been watching, though, it?s been an expensive, vitriolic affair.

"It?s something which ordinarily isn?t seen," said Matthew Burbank, associate professor of political science at the University of Utah. "We haven?t seen this kind of money in the attorney general race ? especially a primary."

That doesn?t include Super PACS, which have inserted themselves into the race. A Nevada-based group, It?s Now or Never, launched ads that referenced a so-called "road rage" incident about Reyes while Ute PAC has been sending out mailers charging Swallow with being the target of an FBI investigation for intervening in a contracting bid in Salt Lake County.

The road rage ads were pulled by media outlet KSL Friday after the Reyes campaign sent out cease and desist orders.

Swallow?s campaign ripped Ute PAC for being a Democratic-run entity trying to influence the election with false allegations.

And while there is very little daylight between where the candidates stand on the main issues of the campaign ? give Utah control over federal land, repeal President Barack Obama?s health care law and get tough on illegal immigration ? they are quite different personally.

Reyes, who is running for office for the first time, is a half-Filipino Mormon from Hawaii who has been a private-practice attorney for more than a decade in Utah with awards and accolades he is not shy about touting at speeches during debates. He?s a sports fan who grew up idolizing Magic Johnson, studied mixed martial arts and played on the University of California, Berkeley volleyball team.

"My nickname was The Judge because I was usually on the bench," he said with a laugh.

But it?s basketball that gives him peace. The 41-year-old plays a few times a week and uses hoops as an analogy as to what kind of attorney general he?d be.

Think point guard.

"I want to equip people around me and give them credit. If I need to be the guy to score and take over a game and finish, I can," Reyes said. "But my preference is that everyone around me is involved in the game and doing their part. That?s how you win. You get everyone involved."

He wants to focus on crimes against women and children and target white-collar crime. He said he sees the Attorney General?s Office as "fighting for the underdog."

Brian Church, who has known Reyes since his college days at Brigham Young, said Reyes was always wired that way.

Chinese astronauts go hands-on, manually dock with orbiting module

DNP Chinese astronauts go handson, manually dock with orbiting module

Looks like China continues to add to its space cred after recently joining the rarefied ranks of countries that have successfully docked craft in the final frontier. Fresh off from the recent joining of the Shenzhou 9 capsule with the Tiangong 1 orbiting module, China's three astronauts have now replicated the feat manually, according to the Washington Post . For the uninitiated, the first docking was done via remote control from the ground. The mission has had plenty of firsts for China so far, including the country's first female astronaut. It also serves as a precursor to establishing China's first permanent space station, a 60-ton facility that's about a sixth of the size of the International Space Station but is slightly bigger than NASA's old Skylab. 'Cause sometimes, you just gotta have your own space in space, you know?

In 'grief and shock,' Radiohead delays tour dates

The stage at Downsview Park in Toronto is shown in this combination photograph before (top) and after it collapsed on Saturday, June 16, 2012.

By Rolling Stone

Radiohead released a statement Thursday regarding the stage collapse before the group's recent Toronto show that took the life of drum technician Scott Johnson and injured three other crew members. ?The statement notes that the collapse destroyed much of the group's elaborate light show and stage set-up, parts of which are decades old and will take time to replace, forcing them to postpone seven upcoming European tour dates.

Radiohead push boundaries, salute Jack White at Bonnaroo

"Whilst we all are dealing with the grief and shock ensuing from this terrible accident there are also many practical considerations to deal with," the statement read before listing upcoming shows in Italy, Germany, and Switzerland that will be postponed. The band plans to announce the new dates on June 27th, and they will also offer information for fans who will be unable to attend the rescheduled shows and will be seeking refunds.

"We will make every effort to offer the fans the very best show possible under the circumstances -- thanks for your understanding and support," the statement closed.

Radiohead debut 'Full Stop' in Tinley Park

Along with the rescheduled dates, it was reported on Tuesday that the Canadian Ministry of Labour identified four companies as being directly responsible for the stage collapse, including Radiohead's own Ticker Tape Touring LLP, as well as Toronto-based Optex Staging and Services, Nasco Staffing Solutions and concert promoter Live Nation.

The number of companies involved in putting on the show, however, has made the investigation a bit complex. "We?re still trying to figure out who owns what, who?s responsible for what," Ministry spokesperson Matt Blajer told the Toronto Star. "You?ve got lighting technicians, sound technicians, the band?s people -- we?re trying to figure out who worked for whom."

On Sunday, following the tragic events at Downsview Park, Radiohead drummer Phil Selway wrote on the band's website: "We have all been shattered by the loss of Scott Johnson, our friend and colleague. He was a lovely man, always positive, supportive and funny; a highly skilled and valued member of our great road crew. We will miss him very much. Our thoughts and love are with Scott's family and all those close to him."

Russia warns that Iran nuclear talks too slow to forestall conflict

Russian is uniquely placed to mediate between Iran and world powers, but analysts say Moscow's role is limited in part by a lack of compromise from Washington and Tehran.

Although progress was made at Iran nuclear talks in Moscow this week, Russian analysts are concerned that the pace may be too slow to forestall a military conflict. They also caution that Russia's ability to mediate, a role for which it is uniquely suited, is limited by the lack of compromise from both Washington and Tehran ? and Moscow's own variable relations with the Islamic Republic.

Western diplomats are anonymously spinning the line that Iran doesn't really want a deal that would restrict its nuclear program. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton suggested that some in Iran see an attack is the "best thing ... because that would unify [Iran], it would legitimize the regime."

The Iranian media, likewise, charged that plans of the P5+1 group (the US, Russia, China, Britain, France, and Germany) were "built on an axis of destruction," and that Israel sabotaged the talks. One Iranian lawmaker said failure was inevitable if "Westerners want to move under the instructions of the Zionist regime."

Iran's nuclear program: 4 things you probably didn't know

Russia straddles both camps like no other. As part of the P5+1, it has joined in ever-increasing sanctions on Iran. Yet it also built Iran's only nuclear power reactor, and sold sophisticated armaments to Iran for years.

Like all the members of the P5+1,?Russia does not want Iran to have a nuclear weapon. But it argues that diplomacy is the only way to ensure that end. So Russia's pessimistic assessment may matter, because of the wide chasm that remains as experts gather for technical meetings in Istanbul on July 3.

"For Russia the result is moderately positive," says Sergei Markov, a Kremlin adviser and vice president of the Plekhanov Economic University in Moscow. "It showed Iran is more ready to express its views and compromise, and the Western side did not issue an ultimatum."

Yet the talks need a "more clear advance and quicker developments" if they are to forestall a conflict, says Mr. Markov, who calculates that there is a "quite high" chance of an Israeli attack on Iran in July or August ? just months before the US presidential election in November.

"If we would have three more years of such moderately positive results, it would be good," says Markov. "But in this much tighter time-frame, it is not enough."
