BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Michael J. Fox says Parkinson's disease will not be a major storyline of his upcoming NBC comedy.
On "The Michael J. Fox Show," the actor plays Mike Henry, a former local NBC newscaster with Parkinson's, who left the business to spend more time with his family. The series begins when he decides to return to work now that his kids are older.
At Saturday's Television Critics Association summer press tour, Fox said he didn't think about how others with Parkinson's would react to the show because he doesn't "vet creative instinct."
"I just go with it," he said. "I feel that this is the reflection of my experience and certainly in the pilot it was more prevalent than it is in subsequent scripts. The way I look at life and the reality of Parkinson's, sometimes it's frustrating and sometimes it's funny. I need to look at it that way and other people need to look at it that way. Beyond that we all got our own bag of hammers...I think people will look at that and say, 'Yeah, I need to laugh at my own stuff, too.'"
The premise of the show does have similarities to Fox's real-life story. The actor left "Spin City" in 2000 as he tried different treatments and medications to treat Parkinson's. He also used the opportunity to spend quality time with his four kids during their formative years.
"There's kind of a scrutiny of their stuff that won't exist if I'm being occupied by something else," joked Fox of the distraction of a full-time job.
Fox believes the viewers, however, will not be distracted by his character having Parkinson's on his new series.
"Parkinson's itself there's nothing horrifying to me. It's not horrible. I don't think it's gothic nastiness. There's nothing on the surface horrible about someone with shaking hands."
Since leaving "Spin City," Fox has had recurring roles on shows like "Rescue Me" and "The Good Wife." Those guest spots gave him the itch to do more.
"It really brought me to a place of, 'This is what I do,'" he said. "This is what I was built and programmed to do, and so I wanted to do it. It's what I've loved to do...I thought, 'Why can't I? There's no reason not to do it.'"
Because Fox plays a local NBC newscaster, the show will tap real people to do guest appearances that make the story more believable. Matt Lauer and Savannah Guthrie are in the pilot. New Jersey governor Chris Christie will appear in an episode as himself.
"A fictional television network didn't give us 22 episodes," Will Gluck, executive producer, said jokingly on why they decided to make Fox's Mike Henry work for NBC.
The Michael J. Fox Show" premieres Sept. 26 at 9 p.m. EST/PST.

The energy watchdog, Ofgem, is failing consumers and undermining trust in the market, a group of MPs have said - urging it to "use its teeth a bit more".
A report by the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee has said there is a "lack of transparency" about profits made by the Big Six energy providers.
Committee member and Lib Dem MP Sir Robert Smith said: "At a time when many people are struggling with the rising costs of energy, consumers need reassurance that the profits being made by the Big Six are not excessive.
"Unfortunately, the complex vertically integrated structure of these companies means that working out exactly how their profits are made requires forensic accountants."
Labour MP John Robertson added: "Ofgem needs to use its teeth a bit more and force the energy companies to do everything they can to prove that they are squeaky clean when it comes to making and reporting their profits."
There has been long standing criticism of the UK energy market in which six major competitors show little evidence of competing with each other on price.
Rising prices for consumers in recent years has been blamed on higher wholesale prices for energy providers however the Committee notes in its report that many of Britain's major providers are generators of energy and therefore profit from higher wholesale prices too.
The Big Six have also been criticised for offering a confusing range of tariffs which give the impression of greater consumer choice but offer little in the way of discounts.
British Gas and EDF customer Mary Phillips told Sky News that in the winter she frequently has to choose between spending on food or fuel, and that competition in the energy market has done nothing to help.
She said: "I keep getting notes from all these different energy companies saying that they're making their bills much easier to understand. You're joking!
"Every single different supplier says that they're going to give me a much better deal than all the other suppliers. I don't believe it really. I think they might do it for about three months and then it will all go up suddenly."
As the industry's watchdog, Ofgem has the power to order an inquiry into competition in the energy market but has chosen not to do so.? Instead it hopes that the threat of such a forensic analysis of the Big Six's energy practices will encourage them to clean up their acts.
Ofgem's Rachel Fletcher said: "We share the committee's goal of restoring consumers' trust.
"We agree with the committee that suppliers have been poor at communicating with their customers.
"Ofgem has made energy companies produce yearly financial statements, which have been reviewed twice by independent accountants and found to be fit for purpose."
The report also criticises the Government for not doing enough to help millions of low-income families living in poorly insulated homes and who struggle with fuel poverty.
The MPs argue that programmes to help protect the most vulnerable should be funded through direct taxation rather than levies on the bills of those who can afford it.
Sir Robert said: "Fuel poverty is getting worse as energy prices rise making it all the more critical that the Government must respond to the Hills Review as a matter of urgency.
"Tax-funded public spending is a less regressive mechanism than levies on energy bills, which can hit some of the poorest hardest. Shifting the emphasis from levies to taxation would help protect vulnerable households."

NEW YORK (AP) ? Chris Archer threw a two-hitter for his second shutout in three starts, outpitching Ivan Nova and leading the Tampa Bay Rays to a 1-0 victory over the New York Yankees on Saturday
Kelly Johnson had an RBI single off Nova (4-4) in the sixth to help the AL East-leading Rays improve to 24-5 since June 23, when they were in last place.
Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon said before the game Archer (6-3) embraces the big moments, and he sure did once again t Yankee Stadium.
The 24-year-old rookie with a Captain America lunchbox in his locker never threw more than 14 pitches in an inning and needed just 97 overall ? 67 for strikes ? for his second career complete game.
Archer gave up a single to Lyle Overbay with one out in the fifth and a ground-rule double to Brett Gardner in the sixth for New York's only hits in its sixth loss in nine games since the All-Star break.
Archer did not walk a batter and struck out six. He got to finish what he started, catching Ichiro Suzuki's comebacker and tossing to first for the final out.
Acquired from the Chicago Cubs before the 2011 season in a deal for Matt Garza, Archer enjoyed his best month as a major leaguer. He shut out Houston with a five-hitter on July 14 and his ERA for July is 0.73, an AL record for rookies. The Angels' Bob Lee had an 0.76 ERA in 1964.
Archer outpitched Nova in the Bronx for the second time this season. Last month, Archer won by holding the Yankees to one run over six innings.
Derek Jeter again was absent from the lineup and the Yankees' newest hope to provide power ? Alfonso Soriano ? was hitless in three at-bats, leaving him 0 for 8 since returning to New York.
Jeter was eligible to come off the disabled list Saturday but instead played a simulated game at a location that Yankees would not disclose.
A small flock of pigeons planted themselves at shortstop in the top of the fifth and didn't leave the infield until the eighth. Could they have been looking for Jeter, too?
With the captain out and Alex Rodriguez, on his 38th birthday, rehabbing his quadriceps strain at the Yankees minor league complex in Tampa, Fla., alongside other injured stars, including Curtis Granderson, the Yankees' bats were again dormant.
The Yankees have not homered in nine straight games, their longest streak since going 10 in a row in 1984.
Nova matched Archer with a mixture of fastballs that reached 96 mph and a biting curveball that had the Rays swinging at dirt.
He struck out the side in the fourth after Wil Myers led off with a double and James Loney followed with a walk.
Nova finished off the fifth with strikeouts of out Desmond Jennings and Longoria. Longoria chased a breaking pitch down and away and smacked the barrel of his bat in frustration.
The walks finally hurt Nova in the sixth. His free pass to Matt Joyce with two outs put runners on first and second and extended the inning to allow Kelly Johnson a chance to bat.
Johnson then got enough of a 95 mph fastball to bloop it out into center field to drive in Ben Zobrist for a 1-0 lead. Zobrist had reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base.
NOTES: Yankees DH Travis Hafner was out of the lineup because of a sore shoulder. He was scheduled to have an MRI ... Tampa Bay DH Luke Scott also was not in the starting lineup. He had soreness in the shoulder/upper back area. ... Rodriguez did light running in the outfield, played catch, hit off a tee in the indoor cage and took 17 grounders hit directly at him on the grass in front of the dirt at third. Six fans, one with a poster board sign saying "Happy Birthday Alex" were there when he left. ... The Yankees will honor 2009 World Series MVP Hideki Matsui before Sunday's game. He will sign a minor league contract with New York and then officially retire as a member of the Yankees. ... Maddon became a grandfather for the fourth time. Giuseppe Ennio Maddon was born Friday night.

Soccer: U.S. coach Klinsmann to miss Gold Cup final
Soccer ? U.S. coach suspended for finale after semis ejection.
Chicago ? The U.S. soccer team will be missing a key figure for the Gold Cup final against Panama on Sunday: their coach.
Jurgen Klinsmann was suspended for one game Friday by CONCACAF?s disciplinary committee, the result of his ejection in the 87th minute of a 3-1 victory over Honduras in the semifinals Wednesday. Klinsmann was dismissed "for showing dissent towards the referee by throwing the ball in a violent manner," the disciplinary committee found, and said FIFA rules require anyone ejected from a match to be suspended for the following game.
The decision cannot be appealed.
"I don?t think it changes too much," U.S. captain DaMarcus Beasley said Friday. "It?s always good to have him on the bench, but he?ll give his wisdom before the game ... make sure we get off on the right foot. But it?s not going to be the same not seeing his face on the sideline, giving us instructions when we need it and being the enthusiastic person that he is on the bench. Especially, when we score or he needs to tell us something if we need to change something."
Klinsmann was irate Wednesday after the referee failed to issue cards on a series of hard fouls against the Americans. He could be seen yelling and gesturing angrily in the direction of the referee, and was told to leave the field after he slammed a ball into the ground.
Klinsmann later apologized, saying he acted out of frustration.
"I was talking to the ref as well. There weren?t any cards," Beasley said. "I got hit three, four times in somewhat the same sequence, and they didn?t call anything but a foul. So I could understand his frustration. I was frustrated."
The Americans are seeking their fifth Gold Cup title. They also are looking to extend their record 10-game winning streak in all matches.
"This is what he lives and dies for," Eddie Johnson said. "This is the opportunity that American soccer has been wanting, to have a coach with such experience, who?s played at the highest level and played on big teams and managed big players, to be in this position to help us get to where we?re trying to go in American soccer."
