Samsung gets iPad, iPhone banned in US

Samsung Electronics, claimed victory over arch-rival Apple Inc. in their long-running argument over mobile device patents after a U.S. trade agency issued an order following banning older but popular till date Apple products from the U.S. market.

The US International Trade Commission ordered on Tuesday that Apple had infringed on a patent that Samsung owns. The patent involves the capability of devices to pass on multiple services concurrently and appropriately through 3G wireless technology.

The self-governing federal agency striked a ban on the import or sale of the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 3G and iPad 2 3G disseminated by AT&T, the major seller of Apple devices in the US when Samsung filed its complaint in 2011. The products are accumulated in Asia.

On the other hand, Apple still has a chance to keep its top selling products on shelves. U.S. President Barack Obama has 60 days to review the ruling. If he does not veto the order, it will go into effect immediately.

It is not right away clear what the impact could be on Apple or AT&T should Obama let the ruling stand, since the decision remains subject to a potentially extended appeals process.

While the products targeted are more than a year old, some models such as the iPhone 4 are still solid sellers.
