Verizon Galaxy Nexus now free on contract at Best Buy Mobile

Galaxy Nexus

One of the hardest parts about buying a new phone is generally justifying the price, especially when the hardware is not brand-spanking new. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus on Verizon has been out for a while, and isn't the newest of news, but that doesn't mean that many of you out there don't want it still. What better way to get that Galaxy Nexus in your pocket than the cost of just a few minutes in the store, and a signature for another two years with Verizon? That's right, no cost to you, the device is simply going to be free on contract.

While it doesn't say just how long it will last, most Best Buy sales run until the next Sunday, so be sure to act quick. Now we sit back and wait for the Jelly Bean update to hit the Verizon units as well!

Romney courts donors, raises cash in Israel

(AP) ? Having publicly pledged a "solemn duty and moral imperative" to protect Israel, Mitt Romney told Jewish donors Monday that their culture is part of what has allowed them to be more economically successful than the nearby Palestinians.

"As you come here and you see the GDP per capita, for instance, in Israel which is about $21,000 dollars, and compare that with the GDP per capita just across the areas managed by the Palestinian Authority, which is more like $10,000 per capita, you notice such a dramatically stark difference in economic vitality," the Republican presidential candidate told about 40 wealthy donors who breakfasted around a U-shaped table at the luxurious King David Hotel.

The economic disparity between the Israelis and the Palestinians is actually much greater. Israel had a per capita gross domestic product of about $31,000 in 2011, while the West Bank and Gaza had a per capita GDP of just over $1,500, according to the World Bank.

Romney, seated next to billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson at the head of the table, said he had read books and relied on his own business experience to understand why the difference is so great.

"And as I come here and I look out over this city and consider the accomplishments of the people of this nation, I recognize the power of at least culture and a few other things," Romney said, citing an innovative business climate, the Jewish history of thriving in difficult circumstances and the "hand of providence."

The reaction of Palestinian leaders was quick and strong.

"What is this man doing here? Yesterday, he destroyed negotiations by saying Jerusalem is the capital of Israel, and today he is saying Israeli culture is more advanced than Palestinian culture. Isn't this racism? Israelis and Palestinians have a conflict, but they are people, they are equal, it is not a better culture or advanced culture," said Saeb Erekat, a top Palestinian official.

"It's Israeli occupiers and Palestinians under occupation, and that's why Palestinians cannot realize their potential," he said.

The breakfast with top donors ? including Adelson, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson and hedge fund manager Paul Singer ? concluded Romney's visit to Israel, the second leg of a three-nation overseas tour designed to bolster the his foreign policy credentials.

Standing on Israeli soil for the first time as the GOP's presumptive presidential nominee, Romney on Sunday declared Jerusalem to be the capital of the Jewish state and said the United States has promised never to "look away from our passion and commitment to Israel."

The status of Jerusalem is a critical issue in peace talks between the Israelis and the Palestinians.

During his visit to Israel, Romney did not meet with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas or visit the West Bank. He held a brief meeting with Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.

Romney's campaign says his trip abroad, which began in England last week, is aimed at improving the former Massachusetts governor's foreign policy experience through a series of meetings with foreign leaders. The candidate has largely avoided direct criticism of U.S. President Barack Obama while on foreign soil.

The Jerusalem fundraiser, however, was a political event that raised more than $1 million for Romney's campaign. It marks at least the second finance event during his tour. The first, in London, attracted about 250 people to a $2,500 per person fundraiser.

Both presidential candidates have aggressively courted American donors living abroad, a practice that is legal and has been used for decades.

Several donors were among those gathered in Jerusalem for Romney's speech on Sunday.

Romney's declaration that Jerusalem is Israel's capital was keeping with claims made by Israeli governments for decades, even though the United States, like other nations, maintains its embassy in Tel Aviv.

His remarks on the subject during his speech drew a standing ovation from his audience, which included Adelson, the American businessman who has promised to donate more than $100 million to help defeat Obama.

Adelson was among a several donors who flew to Israel for a day of sightseeing with Romney in addition to private meetings with top Israeli officials.

A group of donors also met with a top aide to President Benjamin Netanyahu, one donor said on the condition of anonymity to discuss private meetings.

Romney met with Netanyahu and other leaders before the speech. He also visited the Western Wall, Judaism's holiest site, where he was mobbed by worshippers.

In his remarks, Romney steered clear of overt criticism of Obama, even though he said the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran "has only become worse" in the past five years.

In an unspoken rebuttal to Obama and other critics, Romney said, "It is sometimes said that those who are the most committed to stopping the Iranian regime from securing nuclear weapons are reckless and provocative and inviting war.

"The opposite is true. We are the true peacemakers," he said.

Romney flew to the Middle East from Britain, where he caused a stir by questioning whether officials there were fully prepared for the Olympic Games. A stop in Poland will complete his trip.

Four years ago, Obama visited Israel as a presidential candidate, part of a five-nation trip meant to establish his own foreign policy credentials.

A goal of Romney's overseas trip is to demonstrate his confidence on the world stage, but his stop in Israel also was designed to appeal to evangelical voters at home and to cut into Obama's support among Jewish voters and donors. A Gallup survey of Jewish voters released Friday showed Obama with a 68-25 edge over Romney.

Romney and other Republicans have said Obama is insufficiently supportive of Israel.

In a March speech before a pro-Israel lobby in Washington, Obama warned of "loose talk of war" that serves only to drive up oil prices. "Now is the time to let our increased pressure sink in and sustain the broad international coalition we have built," he said at the time.

Apple iPhone 5 and iPad mini event planned for September 12, iPhone 5 release date for September 21

Apple iPhone 5 and iPad mini event planned for September 12, iPhone 5 release date for September 21

iMore has learned that Apple is planning to debut the new iPhone at a special event on Wednesday, September 12, 2012, with the release date to follow 9 days later on Friday, September 21. This information comes from sources who have proven accurate in the past.

The iPad mini will be announced at the same September 12 event, as will the new iPod nano. We haven't heard a release date for the iPad mini yet, but it could be the same as the iPhone 5. It seems likely the new iPod touch will make an appearance on September 12 as well, though we haven't heard any specific information about that yet either.

Last year, the iPhone 4S was announced on Tuesday, October 4, 2011, and released 10 days later on October 14. The event included minor updates to the iPod line, notably a white iPod touch 4. This year, the iPad 3 was announced on Wednesday, March 7, 2012, and released 9 days later on March 16. The event included a 1080p Apple TV.

Back in March, we heard Apple was targeting an October release window for the iPhone 5,1, much like last year's iPhone 4,1 (iPhone 4S). Recently, however, several reports have suggested Apple would be ready to go as early as September. Last week, App4Phone.fr, citing Chinese manufacturing sources, reported the September 21 release date.

Unlike last year, when some 16 months separated the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4, a September 21 schedule would put the iPhone 5 launch at just over 11 months after the iPhone 4S.

The longer schedule last year allowed Apple to re-position the iPhone as the new, big fall product release. It took the spotlight from the iPod family that previously ruled the holiday quarter, but has waned in recent years. It also padded the time between the Verizon iPhone 4 launch, which only occurred in February of 2011, and gave four extra months for Apple to work on iOS 5, which included major new features like iCloud, Notification Center, iMessage, and Siri.

iOS 6, which was announced during Apple's WWDC 2012 keynote on June 11 and includes a new, Google-free Maps app, and Passbook, should get a final presentation during the September 12 event as well, and if Apple sticks to previous patterns, a release sometime around Wednesday, September 19.

Apple typically shows off extra, hardware-specific iOS features at new iPhone events as well. For the last few years, Apple SVP of Marketing, Phil Schiller, has demonstrated advanced camera and video recording, and Apple SVP of iOS, Scott Forstall, has demonstrated Voice Control, FaceTime, and Siri. For now, we have only educated guesses (see the conclusion) as to what else might be coming to iOS this year.

As for hardware, we're still hearing the iPad mini will be exactly like the 9.7-inch iPad, only scaled down to 7.x-inches. We originally heard Apple had a few iPhone 5 prototypes, including 3.5-inch and 4-inch versions, but recent reports and parts leaks make it look like the 4-inch, 16:9 screen version is what Apple's going with. We've also consistently heard all new iOS devices will have the new, smaller Dock connector iMore learned about back in February, which along with the nano-SIM and rumored in-cell display should leave lots of room for the LTE radio we learned about earlier in the year, and the bigger battery to go along with it.

If these announcement and release dates prove accurate, we should find out in only 6 short weeks.

Update: John Paczkowski of the Wall Street Journal's AllThingsD is now reporting the same September 12, 2012 for the Apple event.

Update 2: Jim Dalrymple of The Loop has added his trademark "yep".

Update 3: The Verge is now reporting the September 12, 2012 date as well.

Cindy's Clipboard: Family Baby Shower

I attended a baby shower today for my niece Mary,
hosted by her sisters. I blogged about her gender reveal party here,

where we learned she was expecting a baby boy.

Baby boy's name is Saylor James. Unique, don't you think?

His momma has had that name picked out for years for her first son.

As a play off of the name, the shower theme was Saylorman.?

The cake was in the shape of a can of spinach.
Too cute!

There were paper boats, Lifesavers?and?bowls of goldfish.

And mini burgers for Wimpy.?

"I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today."

I told Mary that we think Saylor is going to be a pirate.

Here's daddy Joel putting together Mary's favorite gift.

This contraption is called a mamaRoo.

As I said at the shower,

I have now seen everything when it comes to baby stuff!?

You can even plug your iPod into the base to play the baby's own playlist.

Crazy!

Here are three of my adult nieces.
Hostess Amy, Mama-to-be Mary and Hostess Tracy.
Great shower, girls!

Philippines captures top Al-Qaeda linked militant

Philippine authorities have arrested a founding member of the Al Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf group blamed for some of the worst terror attacks in the region, security officials said on Sunday.

Ustadz Ahmadsali Asmad Badron, also known as Ammad or Hamad Ustadz Idris, was arrested on Saturday in the remote Tawi-Tawi islands in the southern Philippines.

Police criminal investigation regional chief Edgar Danao said Badron was one of the founding members of Abu Sayyaf, which was founded in the 1990s using seed money from Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

Along with one of his cousins Badron worked alongside Galib Andang, the notorious Abu Sayyaf leader well known as "Commander Robot", under whom the group carried out a daring cross-border raid on a Malaysian resort in April 2000 and kidnapped dozens of foreign tourists.

The kidnapping gained Abu Sayyaf international notoriety even as the hostages were freed in batches after millions were paid following ransom negotiations brokered by Libya, officials said.

"Badron was among the trusted members of (Abu Sayyaf) who made millions of pesos in ransom money collected from their operations," Danao said.

Subsequent US-backed operations against Abu Sayyaf led to the killing of key leaders, while many others including Andang were arrested, but later killed in a botched attempt to escape in 2005.

While on the run, Badron allegedly helped foreign militants from another regional terror group, the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), to hide in the southern Philippines.

The JI is blamed for a spate of deadly attacks in Indonesia, including the 2002 bombings on the Indonesian resort island of Bali that killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists.

Badron's arrest came as troops were hunting down another Abu Sayyaf unit on the nearby Basilan island following clashes that left at least 10 soldiers dead last week.

While the government has repeatedly branded the Abu Sayyaf a spent force, experts say the group remains well-entrenched in thick jungles of the southern Philippines, where they have splintered into smaller units.

NBC draws ire for not streaming Olympics ceremony

NEW YORK (AP) ? A look at media coverage of the Summer Olympics:

Even before NBC signed on for its coverage of the Summer Olympics in London on Friday, it drew a storm online for its decision not to stream the opening ceremony digitally. Despite the grumbling, it's a decision that may pay off for the network.

NBC Universal has promised to stream live online every athletic competition in the Summer Games for the first time. But the opening and closing ceremonies were always planned to be shown on tape delay, a network spokesman said. Coverage began shortly before 8 p.m. on the East Coast, about the same time that spectators in London ? which is five hours ahead of New York time ? were filing out of Olympic Stadium.

NBC Sports spokesman Christopher McCloskey said the ceremonies "are complex entertainment spectacles that do not translate well online because they require context, which our award-winning production team will provide for the large prime-time audiences that gather together to watch them."

Many people took to Twitter to complain Friday that they felt cheated by the decision, and provided online links to other outlets, like the BBC, that were streaming the ceremony online.

The website for Business Insider said "boo" about NBC's decision and offered two links. The popular sports website Deadspin posted a link to the BBC stream and urged its followers to watch it as a way of sending NBC an obscene gesture.

CNN's Piers Morgan, who was tweeting details about the ceremony in the late afternoon, tweeted shortly before 7:30 p.m. ET: "Laughable that America is yet to start watching the Olympic ceremony on TV. Seriously."

But NBC executives will gladly trade the complaints for a repeat of what happened four years ago in Beijing.

The network similarly offered the opening ceremony then on tape delay and there were many complaints, although less widespread because of a less wired world. But all the talk about the ceremony in the hours before it was televised created a buzz, and the 34.9 million people who watched it was the largest opening ceremony audience in 12 years. NBC makes most of its money through its prime-time advertising, and the strong opening night ratings set a tone that continued throughout the Games.

NO RUSH: Did some of the Olympic trivia uncovered by NBC researchers hit the cutting room floor on Friday? NBC prime time hosts Bob Costas and Matt Lauer noted more than once that athletes were entering the stadium for the opening parade at a faster clip than normal.

UPCOMING: We'll know quickly whether swimmer Michael Phelps will make these games his personal gold mine, like he did in Beijing. Phelps' faceoff with fellow American Ryan Lochte in the 400 meter individual medley highlights Saturday's full opening day of competition.

The future of online presentation - Internet and Website Design

Recent technology developments have sent traditional media into a tailspin, turning nearly every proven marketing strategy into a gamble.

Across the world, in every industry, companies are scrambling to update the marketing tactics on which they?ve relied for generations. At the same time, consumers are craving engaging, relevant content that complements both their interests and their lifestyles.

The most popular search engines have responded to these demands with fundamental changes that have shaken the advertising industry?s foundation.

As marketers, publishers and business owners strive to keep up with this critical juncture in online media, two things are clear: multiplatform digital consumers are driving the future of online presentations, and long-term, positive branding hinges on a company?s ability to create personal connections with its customer base.? In other words, the future is changing around us?and we?re the ones doing the changing!

According to the Pew Research Center, the younger, hyper-connected generation is rapidly becoming dependent on mobile technology. This makes sense, as larger numbers of personal devices now come equipped with out-of-the-box networking capabilities. Smart phones, iPods, and even video game consoles all now rely on connectivity not as a selling point, but as an absolute necessity.

Between Summer 2011 and Spring 2012, tablet ownership grew nearly 50 percent, and roughly 44 percent of Americans are now smartphone owners. These two developments have drastically influenced how consumers find and follow their news, their entertainment, and their friends. It is now common to read a newspaper from a tablet screen, listen to music streaming over the Internet or converse with others electronically via text and video.

These sweeping changes in how people access information make responsive web design a critical element in marketing campaigns. Digital mavens who rely on numerous devices and browsers are demanding a consistent, single source of content that is easily navigable and quickly supplies essential information. Individual landing pages are increasingly proving to be an engaging way to connect with customers from any channel, whether it is through a QR code, a pay-per click advertisement or a specific keyword search.? One way or another, potential customers and clients are being driven to the content they seek?and that provides companies and marketers with a built-in audience.

App development in the publishing and business industries is also skyrocketing. Downloads available through the Apple App Store have increased exponentially from 10,000 in late 2008 to 799,850 in April 2012, with 895 new games and applications posted daily. Gaming, books, entertainment, education and lifestyle apps, which are enjoying immense popularity, can help to facilitate meaningful business to consumer connections. National Public Radio (NPR), for instance, reports that 80 percent of radio listeners also access content via its Android app.

Unfortunately, this pursuit of the tablet audience requires significant time and financial investment that few media producers are willing to expend, and that refusal to embrace an app?s added reach is increasingly becoming a commercial liability. The critical issue in overlooking all these devices is the potential loss of a customer. The nature of the Internet enables consumers to simply select the next person on the list who does provide the services they are seeking?and that list is both easy to access and full of competitors willing to give customers what they?re looking for.

?From the content-delivery perspective, if you are not able to deliver to all the different platforms, then you are missing a portion of the market who might want to view your content on a platform that you do not support,? explains Alex Dobrushin, chief marketing officer for Wowza Media Systems, Inc., in an April 2012 article in Streaming Media magazine. ?You?re also missing an opportunity to generate revenue from that content.?

This ability to instantly access information from anywhere requires publishers to present strong, useful content. News aggregators that gather value-added information are becoming the go-to resource for those seeking more details about the topics that interest them. Social bookmarking websites, such as Diigo, Delicious and Reddit, are successful simply because they point the way to interesting third-party content.? Users can even help to curate the material, which makes it more likely that what you?re looking at is something worth seeing.

Due to the nature of Google?s search algorithm, original content is paramount. Recycled product descriptions are now removed from the first page of search results ? or at least they?re supposed to be ? while keyword-laden and scraped articles do not attract unique and repeat visitors. Content curators who produce a diverse mix of quality blogs, videos, tweets, posts and wikis are a hot commodity in the business world right now, simply because this is exactly what consumers and readers are already looking for.

Traditional media outlets, which have suffered a steep decline in loyal readers, are experimenting (often successfully) with the aggregate, curate and create business model. The news outlets who embrace such an approach are often significantly outperforming traditional sources of information, including print weeklies, such as Time and Newsweek, cable news wire services, such as the Associated Press, and entertainment outlets, such as the Hollywood Reporter.

The Daily Beast, which presents a ?smart, speedy? viewpoint on world news, experienced a 251 percent growth in 2010, while the Huffington Post?s syndicated columnists, blogs and news articles attract 36.2 million unique monthly visitors. The news aggregator has launched 44 new channels during the past year, including HuffPost Green and HuffPost Gay Voices, which dominate comScore in their respective categories.? This is good news for readers who had long turned their attention toward smaller blogs with a personal voice that appeals to them; the uprising of aggregators provides a wider swath of relevant material to a much larger readership, and that benefits everybody.

Sources that offer a blend of online and offline content alongside paid subscriptions and free information are flourishing. This multi-platform strategy works because it serves the varied interests of a diverse audience. The ad-supported Washington Post has experienced great success this past year by adding Trove, a free social news site that aggregates content from more than 10,000 portals. The venerated news outlet also charges for e-reader article downloads and recently launched a paid iPad app for premium political news.

This platform diversification is critical. According to the Pew Research Center?s State of the News Media 2012 report, ?mobile technology is adding to news consumption, strengthening the appeal of traditional news brands and even boosting reading of long-form journalism. The move toward mobile holds some promising options for news producers.?

Community media

The prevalence of personal communication outlets, from social media and customer review websites to blogs and videos, has created intimate channels that enable consumers to communicate in real-time. While these channels are social by nature, the end-goal is to build strong communities.

In the October 2011 blog post ?Perspectives on the Future of Community,? Vanessa DiMauro, CEO of Leader NetworksAccess, notes that ?valuable content is the single most compelling driver for participating in an online community. Content serves as the trigger to join, providing contexts for conversations between members. People come for content and stay for community.?

Additionally, during the 13th International Symposium on Online Journalism, which took place April 20-21, 2012, Debra Galant, the founder of Baristanet, stressed the importance of providing ?quality coverage of local issues.? She also noted that a ?sense of personality and personalized writing is what differentiates? hyperlocal news sites, such as Patch, from traditional national news sources.

Specialized, private online communities are gaining traction as network websites, such as LinkedIn and Facebook, grow to enormous proportions. Platforms that provide targeted connections, like Google+ Circles, offer some control over who receives information. These gated communities assist news aggregators and curators in meeting the specialized needs of their followers.? Ultimately, it?s clear where the internet is heading: personal engagement, and personalized content. For web designers, that?s both impossible to ignore and a thrilling challenge to embrace.

Streaming videos

To say that the popularity of streaming media is swelling is a massive understatement. YouTube currently attracts 800 million monthly visitors. This AdSense-supported website supplies a lucrative revenue stream for Google, which has more than doubled its advertisement partner ad revenue for four years straight. Businesses, from the Wall Street Journal to Disney, are leveraging the user-generated content platform by posting commercials, infomercials, product reviews as well as CEO and customer testimonials.? Customers, contrary to generations of belief that that they are there to be served, are increasingly demonstrating that they enjoy serving themselves, shaping their own experience, and having a little fun along the way.

As video becomes a mission-critical method for engaging customers, innovative leaders are curating new platforms that cater to their niche audiences. The Huffington Post Streaming Network (HPSN) is set to launch this year, providing 12 hours of news content designed to rival cable news outlets like CNN. The paid NBA League Pass, which is available via television, broadband Internet and mobile channels, permits basketball fans to watch, rewind and record up to 40 live games each week. The on-demand access is supplemented with a vast array of content, from player statistics to play-by-play reviews.

Recent federal government mandates established under the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act now requires the inclusion of captioning on most streaming media. This is sure to have a colossal impact on how videos are curated, shared and indexed, so, as always, it?s important to look to the future if we intend to survive beyond the present.

Advertising

The ever-evolving nature of technology, combined with the recent recession, has severely affected how and where advertisers spend their dollars. Print newspaper advertising, once the dominant method for notifying the public about department store sales and job openings, lost nearly 40 percent of its supporters between 2006 and 2010 to online outlets.

Strategically placed backlinks attached to blog posts, articles, videos, forums and social networking sites are proving to be much more powerful for attracting potential customers. The most effective links point consumers to content that is valuable, even if it directs them to off-site information that is not associated with the company.? After all, attracting the customer to your site or blog isn?t going to do any good if you can?t also furnish them with the information that they seek. By providing that information, even through external links to other companies or institutions, you are demonstrating a respect for their time, and establishing yourself in their mind as a resource worth recommending and returning to.

Implications for the future presentation of online media

The diverse array of technologies that enable us to access information is drastically impacting the presentation and consumption of online media. Rising to the top of the viewing platforms are the iPad and iPhone, both of which are expected to receive an iOS update this year. In addition to video streaming, innovative advertisers are keeping on an eye on developing strategies for Internet-connected televisions and gaming devices, such as Xbox and PlayStation3, as well as the recently announced Wii U.

With this constant evolution, marketing strategies must be flexible so that they can adapt to any present and future format. To ensure adaptability, content must be attached to detailed metadata and then digitized and stored at the highest quality. Additionally, loyal brand buy-in will only result when companies listen to their customers? challenges and goals, then develop helpful solutions.

Social work and end-of-life care: issues for debate @SWSCmedia ...

Join us for a Special Evening??@SWSCmedia?on Palliative and End-of-Life care with Malcolm Payne (@MalcolmPayne) on Tuesday (31-July-2012) at 8:00 PM GMT / 3:00 PM EDT?@SWSCmedia.

Planning for living needs to include planning for dying. End-of-life care is not a specialised area of medicine, involving a few specialised social workers working in hospices and hospitals. We all die: and because people around us die, we will all be bereaved. Most people who die are in the older age groups, and anyone who is in their sixties and beyond will probably have given some thought to the death that is nearing them, and may have extremely well-worked out plans, including wills, funeral plans, and lasting powers of attorney all completed.

When people come into the social care system, it is a social work duty to make sure that planning for dying is integral to the help they get in planning for living. This may mean just checking and confirming their own planning and making sure it is well-integrated with social care services as we provide them. Or it may mean helping them make a start on the planning they have put off: we all put off planning in a well-meaning way and some people are just not planful in their lives. But we are not doing a good social work job unless we make sure that people using our services are thinking about what they want from our services, including what they want as they approach death. Because if we have not helped the users of our services know what they want, how can we provide it? And if we don?t discuss with them the options and possibilities that, with our experience and training, we can see in their situations, how can we have secured their informed consent to our intervention with them?

And end-of-life care does not need to be in the ?too difficult? box. There can be powerful emotions around, which slow up the routine care management and form-filling of adult social care, and which may be frightening in their intensity or touch on something in a practitioner?s life. But mostly, people are managing a complicated time in their lives and they need the practical social work that guides them through the problems and the caring social work that helps them with the strength to carry on. We can do that; we do it all the time.

Another thing: to be with someone who is dying, and to help their family and friends feel that they died well, is tremendously satisfying, and practitioners will get more good feedback from this work than anything they have encountered in their practice before.

So, the argument for social work in end-of-life care is: end-of-life is part of life, and anyone who is using social care has started on the path which brings them in touch with their death. Any adult social care service needs to recognise that. A crucial element of adult social care is advance care planning. As soon as we offer some social care, we need also to start the conversation about how this care will change and develop through the remainder of this person?s life. All end-of-life care is about balancing the reality of our increasing disablement and future death with hope for what we can achieve at this time and in the future of our lives. Reality and hope both need to be kept in perspective. The message is a misquote of the old adage: hope for the best and plan for doing something about the things that will get in the way of the best.

This is especially true for older people, but it is also true for people with disabilities and mental ill-health. Although many people in these categories are working for the best possible life, a good life depends on security in planning for everything that might happen. People with long-term progressive disabilities (and most major disabilities are progressive to some degree) need to think about how they and their families want to handle their lives and their care as they go through future stages.

The medical bias that has come from palliative care for dying people does not help. Palliative care is the major source of expertise in end-of-life care. It is also the source of the essential idea that if you manage the symptoms and care needs well, people are enabled to get on with the important things in their lives: their relationships and their own personal development. But because palliative care started from dealing with cancer, AIDS and other diagnosable illnesses, it does not cope well with the uncertainties of long-term conditions and the slowly increasing frailty which is the lot of so many older people. The NHS definition of ?end-of-life care? is one year from the end of life: the problem is that unless you have a clear diagnosed terminal illness, there is no evidence that anyone can tell when you have reached that phase. One answer is the ?surprise? question: practitioners can get nursing and medical colleagues to ask themselves this: ?would I be surprised if this person died in the next twelve months?? If so, they should be getting what the NHS regards as end-of-life care. Once you can get doctors and nurses to decide this, the GP should put the patient on their end-of-life care register, and additional resources and support should come from the NHS, if it is needed, although it usually won?t be until close to that year?s end. Medicine and nursing, like social work, has an ethic of optimism: ?we are going to cure this person, we are going to help them?, but that shouldn?t stop us from thinking about the reality alongside all the progress they make, they will also need to plan for those aspects of their life that will worsen.

The social care answer to the limitations of this NHS concept of end-of-life care is to include a social care approach to end-of-life care in all their practice. This reflects the reality that when social care has been commissioned for someone, it is clear that they have problems in their daily living that are probably going to get worse. So now, right at the outset of their care career, this is the time to start planning what they want as their daily life gets more difficult.? This is the best way of making sure they and their family are looking out for things that might go wrong to prevent them happening, and for thinking about what needs to be put in place to make sure they can maintain their life as they want it for as long as possible.

An essential part of maintaining that life as they want it is their own personal development. It is not a life just staring at daytime television, or playing bingo, when you want to visit museums and read history books; whatever. My experience in palliative care demonstrates the crucial important of the arts, and we need to transfer this experience to social care. People have been told at school that they are no good at art or music, and they?ve gone on believing it throughout their lives. Or they?ve come to believe they are no good at sport, because the school was only interested in the people who could play for the team. Most people can be tremendously stimulated and interested to try out their natural ability in many different arts and activities. We can?t all win Oscars or Olympic gold medals, but we can enjoy it. People can use the advances in digital photography or cheap video production to make films or photographic essays about their life, family or locality, passing on knowledge that only they have. Writing a biography or setting down their opinions can be a revelation to families who have dismissed granny as boring. The internet offers a way of communicating their achievements more widely, or they can just share it with the family or have the quiet satisfaction of knowing that they?re still doing something interesting with their lives.

By trying some new kinds of exercise (Zumba, yoga, pilates, the Alexander Technique) and finding they enjoy it, people can become fitter again, and if they are, their aches and pains will affect them less and they will stay healthier longer.

All of this means that they have more in their lives, so they?re more interesting people, they?ve got something to talk about. So visiting granny becomes, not a boring chore, but an interesting adventure. One of the important objectives of social work is cementing social relationships and creating social solidarity: this is an great way of doing it. This is not only important for people who are dying, but it?s an achievement that members of their family will take into stronger family relationships in the future. ?Look how we all helped grandpa die well? can become ?Look what a strong family we are?.

Another social care answer is to build the skills and confidence in all sorts of services to respond to end-of-life life care needs. Care workers visiting older people?s homes need the training and support to identify when things are going wrong, so that something can be done. Staff in care homes need the skills and confidence to? know: ?We can talk about the difficult things with our residents. Even though we know this resident is getting very frail and ill, we can help her to live until the moment of death as well as possible, where she feels secure and her family can be with her. We know we won?t be blamed if she dies here, so we?re not going to blue-light her into accident and emergency to die lonely in a hospital corridor?. We need to do the advance planning that will enable us to commission the help that people need to die well wherever they are, and we can?t do that advance planning until we?ve had the conversations which will tell us how people want it to be. The social work skills, therefore, are essential to doing the interpersonal work that will allow us to commission services well. Commissioning is not just management, it relies on the interpersonal social work of assessment and advance care planning.

That applies not only in care homes, with and without nursing, but in all the ?homes? where older people may be cared for: people in prisons and on psychiatric wards get old, too. And most especially in people?s own homes, where if commissioning is really responsive to what people want and is properly interwoven with what family members can realistically contribute, we can help people die well.

Social workers and adult social care departments also need to think about the implications of end-of-life care for safeguarding responsibilities. The prevalence studies suggest that a lot of older people?s safeguarding needs arise from psychological abuse or neglect. This can be a particular issue for people coming towards the end of life, not necessarily because their carer?s abuse ramps up, but because people do not adjust to the increasing physical frailty and psychological vulnerability as they approach death. I have experienced situations where women expect (and are expected) to carry on doing all the housework and cooking, where an adult male has still been expected to take the lead in all the decisions, where a spouse has not moderated their sexual demands and where a robust pattern of family disputation has carried on around an exhausted dying person. It is also important to remember that the dying person may also be an abuser in the relationship: their previously dominating behaviour may become hectoring and demanding and the difficult behaviour of a mentally ill dying person still continues to frustrate and anger their carers and they react accordingly. We don?t need to attach blame or criticism.? It is important though to prepare people to plan for increasing frailty and the transfer of responsibilities to other members of the family or friends. Help with moving a frail person around can also be a good preventive step. My experience of safeguarding in end-of-life care is that good preparation prevents a lot of problems, and careful explanation and support deals with many of the problems you can?t prevent.

This is also true for bereavement care, which has always been an essential contribution of social work to palliative care. By giving people a good experience of dying, by being open and helping them to understand what is going on and what they can contribute, people will be much more able to prepare for the death of someone that is important to them and manage the emotional and practical consequence s for their family afterwards. That means they can reorganise their relationship with that person after death. They will look back and integrate them into their lives and their family in a new way, but also look forward and develop a new way of living that incorporates their memories and their past life with the person who has died. People often need good information about how bereavement is likely to affect them. Have we commissioned that? Are we sure that it is always provided helpfully? Some people will still struggle: have we commissioned the services that will help them ? a few advice sessions, some practical help with finance, some conversations with a well-trained volunteer? For the few people who will have a serious adverse reaction, have we commissioned a good quality, well-known service high in public confidence that people know they can go to and that other professions know they can refer to? Across the UK, a well-regarded, well-known, secure local bereavement service has been a low priority for commissioners. As a result, people struggle more with bereavement than they need to, and family life and security is disrupted because of it. We can do better.

And that?s the message for the social work contribution to all end-of-life care: we can do better, and our society will be all the stronger because of it.

'Dancing' producer: 'I wonder about' Bristol

Fred Prouser / Reuters

Bristol Palin will once again be "Dancing" this fall.

By Anna Chan, TODAY

Say the name Bristol Palin, and you'll usually get a strong reaction. This was certainly the case on Friday when ABC revealed that the reality TV personality would be participating in "Dancing With the Stars: All Stars" this fall.?

"It's called All STARs! How exactly is Bristol a STAR? Or a dancer?" wrote reader Kelly Chapman on our Facebook page.

"Palin has to be the biggest joke ever! You mean there wasn't one other person out of over 100 dancers you could choose from?" commented Michele Moran McDevitt.

You get the idea.?

With such reactions in mind, we caught up with "Dancing With the Stars" producer Deena Katz and asked her whether the young Palin will be just as polarizing in her second go-round on the hit show.

"I don't know. I wonder about her," Katz told TODAY.com. "I wonder about everyone. These guys were the charm of their season. ... Do they all have the effect they have before? It's not just Bristol. It's all of them. I'm so curious to see how the audience votes because all of these people were the sparkle of their season."

Though the producer may wonder about Bristol and others, she's quite "thrilled" with the cast the show landed for "All Stars." "It's like I have 160 kids," Katz said. "We had so many great people and it was hard because we only had 12 slots."

Though Bristol is filling one of those 12 spots, another of "Dancing's" most polarizing contestants -- season 10's Kate Gosselin -- is not. But that doesn't mean fans of the reality TV mom won't be seeing her on the ballroom bash. Katz hinted that it's quite possible?the mom of eight would be back in some way.

"I'm hoping that we can bring a lot of people back for packages," she said. "People like that you do want to see. My hope is we can do that."

Do you think Bristol will perform better this time around? Tell us on our Facebook page!

House leader says new Iran sanctions could pass next week

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The House of Representatives may approve a new package of sanctions next week aimed at Iran's oil revenues, the No. 2 House Republican said on Thursday.

House and Senate lawmakers and aides have been putting the finishing touches on the sanctions measure, aiming to have a deal in place before lawmakers leave at the end of next week for a month-long break.

"I am very hopeful we can get this done prior to the August recess," House Majority Leader Eric Cantor said in a comment on the House floor.

The sanctions are designed to crack down on transactions with Iran's national oil and tanker companies, and to hamper the ability of Iranian banks to transfer funds electronically.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, said on Wednesday that he also hoped to wrap up work on the bill before the August break.

The package builds on U.S. penalties for banks that deal with Iran and measures that helped slash Iran's oil sales - sanctions signed into law by President Barack Obama on December 31.

THE GREATEST

Will he? Won't he? British newspapers have buzzed with speculation that Muhammad Ali may have a role in London's Olympic Opening Ceremony on Friday.

The 1960 heavyweight boxing gold medalist and former world champion is in town this week, but looks far too frail to play a significant part in director Danny Boyle's spectacular on Friday night.

At an award ceremony on Tuesday, Ali was helped onto stage and sat largely motionless. Parkinson's disease has stolen the 70-year-old's once-world-beating strength and quick reflexes and frozen his beautiful face into a mask. Ali did not speak at the ceremony.

Among those who hope Ali will make an appearance, however brief, at the Opening Ceremony is Tyrone Monaghan. His father, Paddy, a bare-knuckle boxer, struck up a long friendship with Ali when both were younger. On visits to Britain, Ali regularly would drop by the Monaghans' house ? to drink tea, chat and even spar with Tyrone.

"There are so many great things about him," Tyrone says of Ali. "You can't sum it up in one sentence."

ON THE ROAD AGAIN

Wednesday marks the first day that London's usually aggressive drivers have to respect the unpopular "Games Lanes" ? known informally as Zil lanes, after the Russian limos ? or face a stiff fine.

There were fears of massive tie-ups as two-lane motorways were effectively cut in half to make way for the "Olympic family" vehicles allowed to use the special lanes, so many commuters seem to have switched to public transport to avoid the hassle.

On the A40 highway into central London, rush hour traffic was lighter than usual, and the Zil lane was completely empty save for a few black BMWs and a couple of truck drivers who didn't seem to have got the message.

As the road spilled onto Marylebone Road near Madame Tussauds wax museum, a large electronic sign told motorists they were free to use the Games Lanes at that point, but few ventured over the imposing double-width, solid line painted on the roadway for the Olympics period ? despite the reassurances, they were apparently afraid that London's ubiquitous traffic cameras would cause them to be fined.

Eventually, as traffic slowed and a second sign said all lanes were open, drivers crossed the line and normal traffic patterns resumed.

Motorola to allow bootloader unlocking from Photon Q onwards

Motorola's initial promise to allow unlocked bootloaders came across to many enthusiasts as somewhat hollow: as long as there was an escape clause, carriers like AT&T and Verizon could clamp down and maintain the tough-to-modify status quo. RAZR-philes will be happy to know that there's a plan to cut their own chains loose, after all. Starting with the Photon Q 4G LTE's August launch, owners will have the option to unlock the bootloader of at least some devices in an official way that reportedly keeps carriers satisfied. Details of how the process works will come later; we don't know if Motorola will take a cue from HTC's identifier tokens or try something more exotic, even if it's likely in either case to offer a big, fat disclaimer regarding the warranty. The option won't be the same as buying a phone that's unlocked from the start, but we don't think too many custom ROM lovers will mind after knowing that one more Android manufacturer is on their side.

[Thanks, RTbar]

Zynga?s Mark Pincus: Real-Money Gambling Coming (Outside The US) In First Half Of 2013

zynga pokerReal-money gaming (i.e., online gambling) could provide a big boost to Zynga's faltering bottom line, and the company has talked about making a move into that market in the past. Today CEO Mark Pincus offered a timetable, of sorts ? subject to licensing approvals, he said we should see Zynga's first products in this field in the first half of 2013. "What we've said, and what we have to announce today, is that we have our first products in development and that we intend to release them in markets that are regulated and open, subject to our getting licensing," said Pincus, who was speaking on the analyst conference call discussing Zynga's disappointing second quarter earnings. Those markets don't include the United States: "The US is obviously an attractive market, but it's not an open, regulated environment today."
