Cool Mom Picks - The best arts and crafts storage solutions - Reader ...

My apartment has been taken over by art supplies! I want to hold on to many of the supplies and keep them in an organized manner...if this this possible with a 3 year and 5 year old. -Holly

?

Hi Holly,?
With three of my own little artists, I can empathize! It's easy for a small space to be quickly overrun byall those supplies--not to mention the results of your kids' artistic labor. Here are some of my favorite ideas for storing art supplies and projects. -ChristinaIkea's Expedit bookcase (at top) is my hands-down favorite for art-supply storage, holding craft books, and even for displaying some of their favorite play-dough sculptures. The size you choose will depend on the amount of space you have, of course.

The largest unit can fit a ton of stuff and is tall enough that you can put the messier items (paints) on a top shelf, though there are units that are great for smaller spaces too. We have some bin inserts to hold loose craft supplies. The dark color looks really clean and modern in any room, and I love that it can transition to a regular book shelf (or wall unit) as the kids get older. Just be sure to anchor this to the wall, since the many shelves can be tempting for little ones to climb.?

I also like the modern look of Crate and Barrel's Qube 4-section storage unit in green and white. It won't take up very much space and is easy for little hands to reach if you want them to have access to their crafts. Keep the messier stuff behind the closed doors, and use the other two shelves for books, or additional storage with stacked bins or baskets.
We've seen some clever ways that parents can use a regular over-the-door shoe holder to store craft supplies without taking up too much space. Perfect for apartment dwellers. The canvas versions are more substantial,?though the clear plastic ones make it easier to see what's hiding inside the pockets. Either way, some sticker labels on the outside should do the trick.
If you are looking for a great way to display the kids' masterpiece du jour check out these?easy-to-change frames?which come in a couple of different sizes. There's a favorite with us, since they can display the latest and greatest, while storing a whole bunch of the older (but still greatest) pictures in the springloaded frame base.
We also love using this small but powerful NeatReceipts scanner which can quickly scan and organize art projects to save on your computer---no more guilt when you have to throw things away to make room for the new projects!?

Kodak selling online business to Shutterfly

A man walks past the Kodak World Headquarters sign in Rochester, N.Y. (Adam Fenster / Reuters)

By msnbc.com news services

Kodak said Friday it has agreed to sell its online photo services business to Internet-based publishing service Shutterfly for $23.8 million as the bankrupt company continues to trim its businesses in a massive restructuring.

The move is part of Kodak?s plan to focus its operations. The photography innovator filed for bankruptcy protection in January and announced that it would no longer be making cameras and instead would narrow its focus to its core printer businesses.

Kodak is busy moving away from companies that aren?t part of its core mission, said Mark Kaufman, an investment consultant at MLK Investment Management.

Kaufman notes that commercial printing technology makes up around 75 percent of Kodak?s business now. It?s an area from which the company could potentially capture a lot of revenue, he added. One large commercial printer can generate between $1 million and $5 million a year as Kodak provides ink, software and maintenance services for it, he added.

By getting out of the camera business and selling the online photo services business Kodak will be shedding up to $900 million in revenue, but that still leaves Kodak with a company that generates $5 billion in revenue, coming in part from its commercial printing business, he added.

?That?s still quite a substantial company,? Kaufman said.

Kodak said it has entered into an agreement with Shutterfly for the proposed sale of certain assets of its Kodak Gallery on-line photo services business.

Shutterfly will take over Kodak Gallery customer accounts and images in the United States and Canada, and it will allow customers to opt out of the transition if they do not want their photos to be transferred.

Kodak said the deal with Shutterfly followed a "stalking horse" bid -- a starting bid or minimally accepted offer that other bidders must surpass in a court-supervised auction -- from the web-based personal publishing service.

Kodak Gallery -- which enables users to store and share their own images and create custom printed photobooks, cards and albums -- has more than 75 million users.

Kodak has also said it expected to fetch $1 billion to $2 billion from the sale of about 1,100 digital patents, which is due to get under way by June 30.

A source familiar with the patent sale said the process was moving forward, but added that the completion was not expected anytime soon.

Reuters contributed to this report.

Warp speed? Slowing down could be a killer

Planning a little space travel to see some friends on Kepler 22b? Thinking of trying out your newly-installed FTL3000 Alcubierre Warp Drive to get you there in no time? Better not make it a surprise visit ? your arrival may end up disintegrating anyone there when you show up.

?Warp? technology and faster-than-light (FTL) space travel has been a staple of science fiction for decades. The distances in space are just so vast, and planetary systems ? even within a single galaxy ? are spaced so far apart, that such a concept is needed to make casual human exploration feasible. The concept also caters to the comforts of people?s imagination: Nobody wants to think about Kirk and Spock bravely going to some alien planet while everyone they?ve ever known dies of old age!

While many factors involving FTL travel are purely theoretical ? and may remain in the realm of imagination for a very long time, perhaps forever ? there are some concepts that play well with currently-accepted physics.

The Alcubierre warp drive is one of those concepts.

Proposed by Mexican theoretical physicist Miguel Alcubierre in 1994, the drive would propel a ship at superluminal speeds by creating a bubble of negative energy around it, expanding space (and time) behind the ship while compressing space in front of it. In much the same way that a surfer rides a wave, the bubble of space containing the ship and its passengers would be pushed at velocities not limited to the speed of light toward a destination.

Of course, when the ship reaches its destination it has to stop. And that?s when all hell breaks loose.

Researchers from the University of Sydney have done some advanced crunching of numbers regarding the effects of FTL space travel via Alcubierre drive, taking into consideration the many types of cosmic particles that would be encountered along the way. Space is not just an empty void between point A and point B. Rather, it?s full of particles that have mass (as well as some that do not.) What the research team ? led by Brendan McMonigal, Geraint Lewis, and Philip O?Byrne ? has found is that these particles can get ?swept up? into the warp bubble and focused into regions before and behind the ship, as well as within the warp bubble itself.

When the Alcubierre-driven ship decelerates from superluminal speed, the particles its bubble has gathered are released in energetic outbursts. In the case of forward-facing particles the outburst can be very energetic ? enough to destroy anyone at the destination directly in front of the ship.

?Any people at the destination,? the team?s paper concludes, ?would be gamma ray and high energy particle blasted into oblivion due to the extreme blueshifts for [forward] region particles.?

In other words, don?t expect much of a welcome party.

Another thing the team found is that the amount of energy released is dependent on the length of the superluminal journey, but there is potentially no limit on its intensity.

   1. Stolen NASA laptop had space station command?codes

A laptop stolen from NASA last year was unencrypted and contained command and control codes for the International Space Station on it, the agency's inspector general told a House subcommittee Wednesday.

   2. Warp speed? Slowing down could be a killer
   3. Star among stars? A call to fly Bieber into space
   4. Earth formed from meteorite mix, study hints

?Interestingly, the energy burst released upon arriving at the destination does not have an upper limit,? McMonigal told Universe Today in an email. ?You can just keep on traveling for longer and longer distances to increase the energy that will be released as much as you like, one of the odd effects of general relativity. Unfortunately, even for very short journeys the energy released is so large that you would completely obliterate anything in front of you.?

So how to avoid disintegrating your port of call? It may be as simple as just aiming your vessel a bit off to the side ? or it may not. The research only focused on the planar space in front of and behind the warp bubble; deadly postwarp particle beams could end up blown in all directions!

Luckily for Vulcans, Tatooinians and any acquaintances on Kepler 22b, the Alcubierre warp drive is still very much theoretical. While the mechanics work with Einstein?s general theory of relativity, the creation of negative energy densities is an as-of-yet unknown technology ? and may be impossible.

Which could be a very good thing for us, should someone out there be planning a surprise visit our way!
