CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Have you heard of stem?? It?s an educational buzz word that stands for science, technology, engineering and math.

In Charlotte one university is setting a new standard for students lucky enough and brave enough to give it a try.

This is advanced organic chemistry at Johnson C. Smith University. The university is stepping up its stem program... building a new science center and hoping to entice more students to study the sciences.

Already Johnson C. Smith University has a higher percentage of women students in stem programs than the national average.

"We try to empower our students to make them realize they're capable of doing more then they think they can do,? Dr. Jeff Campbell. ?I think that's the biggest hurdle i find with students here is that they don't realize their potential and their potential is endless."

Johnson C Smith will increase admission in the college of stem by 50 percent when its new center opens in four years.
