Paralympic Cauldron lit in Northern Ireland

A Paralympic cauldron was lit outside Northern Ireland's parliament in Belfast on Saturday, the second of four in Britain's capital cities ahead of the 2012 Games.

A ceremonial cauldron was lit at Stormont before a mini-festival culminating in celebrations at Belfast City Hall.

The flame was lit Wednesday by Scouts on Slieve Donard, Northern Ireland's highest peak at 850 metres.

Flames lit on Wales and Scotland's highest mountains will be brought down to Cardiff and Edinburgh respectively.

They will then join together Tuesday with those from England and Northern Ireland at Stoke Mandeville, the spiritual home of the Paralympics, before a 24-hour torch relay to Wednesday's opening ceremony at the Olympic Stadium in east London.

England's ceremonial cauldron was lit in London on Friday with Prime Minister David Cameron and London Mayor Boris Johnson in attendance.

"The Paralympic flame festivities in Ireland are a showcase for all that is good and positive about our society," said Northern Ireland's sports minister Caral Ni Chuilin.

"Everyone is encouraged to join in this event and it is important that we spread the Paralympic Games' ideal of human endeavour and energy across Ireland."

Several international Paralympic teams have been training in Northern Ireland ahead of the Games, including Jordan.

Two power-lifters and a trainer from the Jordanian squad have been withdrawn after they were charged with offences including sexual assault and voyeurism.
